The American Cancer Society estimated that there were about 42,470 new cases of pancreatic cancer in the U.S. last year. I became sort of obsessed with these stats when a close family member was diagnosed. I also found out that although pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death overall, the lifetime risk of developing it is about 1 in 72 — or 1.38%. The ACS says that the number of pancreatic cancer cases per year has declined over the past 15 to 25 years, but I’ve also seen reports that dispute that.
