I became concerned about whether alcoholism causes pancreatic cancer when my uncle was diagnosed. He’s my dad’s brother and because I’d read that the risk for developing pancreatic cancer triples if a person's mother, father, sister, or brother had the disease, I worried about my dad because he’s an alcoholic. What I found is that most studies have not found a link between alcohol use and pancreatic cancer. But heavy alcohol use can raise the risk of diabetes and chronic pancreatitis, which are risk factors for pancreatic cancer. Also people with cirrhosis, which is often caused by alcoholism, have an increased risk for pancreatic cancer.
