Can I get paid for taking care of my parents?

Can I charge Mother a fee for taking care of her business? Mother (89), was just placed in a nursing facility, I have access to her checking account and it is now up to me, the only child/relative left to handle all her business, paying bills, banking business, etc. Can I charge her a reasonable fee per month for time spent? I don't have POA, just the "or" on her checking account. I don't want any fee charged to interfere with Medicaid in the future! She is on Medicare at present.
