Approximately 208,500 cases of kidney cancer are newly reported annually, with the highest rates of the disease existing on the North American continent. This figure is roughly 2% of all cancer cases reported per year. In the year 2008, in the United States, 54,390 new cases of the cancer were reported, alongside 13,010 deaths as a result of the disease. The rates of kidney cancer have consistently been increasing over the past few years, with a change in diagnostic conventions one of the reasons. However, the increase is considered real and biological as well, and not solely due to practices in the medical community.
