Is Avandia still on the market?
Avandia, a drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline for the treatment of diabetes, was first approved by the FDA in May 1999, and it is still on the market. In 2002, new warnings were printed on the labels for Avandia noting that the risk of heart failure increased when using the drug. The drug received quite a bit of scrutiny again when an article in the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2007 pointed out that the drug did increase the risk of heart attacks. Less than ten percent of diabetes sufferers still use Avandia, but many doctors are suggesting that it should no longer be prescribed.
