I am at my wits end. I care for my 53 year old sister who, since being released from a recent hospital stay has ruined her bed, the carpet and I have spend hundreds on detergent to wash her clothes. She has been incontinent at home since her return home. When she is out with her 'hab-aids' or other family members she never has an 'accident' but at home here she has urinated on my furniture, carpets, her bed and in the kitchen and bathroom floor in front of the toilet. She has PTSD from being abused by her husband and also is MR/DD from birth. I think this must be a behavioral problem because she does not do it when she is with others. Even when I suggest kindly that maybe she should take a bathroom break I am met with her obstinate defial. I am so tired of living in a home that smells of urine. The filth and odor are overwhelming. It seems I spend most of my time washing her clothes or cleaning the floors and furniture. This happens 3-5 times a day. When she is with others, for no matter how long, there are no 'accidents'. I have told her as kindly as I could that I can no longer live like this and she will have to go into a home where there is personnel to clean up after her. This has had no effect on her behavior. What can you suggest for behavior modification? I have tried to gently suggest periodicly trips to the bathroom and I am met with obstinence and defiance. I have made her clean up the urine in the bathroom herself and 2 hours later she will do it again. She is already on Ditropan XL and has no UTI's or other physical problems that would cause this. I am ready to give up and put her in a home, where they have the staff to clean up constantly after her. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions on how I can modify her behavior at home and still keep the peace? This just seems like she is pushing me and taking advantage of me at this point. She is just too lazy to bother to make it the 15 feet from her chair in the livingroom to the bathroom on time. I say this because she does NOT wet herself when she is with anyone else. If this doesn't change she will have to go. Period! I'm done.
