How can I get financial assistance to help with assisted living and nursing home costs?

Question from Anonymous Caring.com community member

I recenlty moved my mother to Tx, she has Dementia/Alzheimer's. She is currently living in an Assisted Living Center. I advised them before her move that her funds were/are limited. I also advised them that I was applying for assistance from the Gov. because my father was a Vet (I was told there was assistance for Spouse's of Vet's). However, I have just discovered that because my Father was not enlisted during "war-time", my Mother is not eligable for the benefit. Now, here is the problem. Her funds are almost depleted, she has a balance at her facility of over $8500. ( I was banking on the retro money from the Gov to pay her expenses). The facility has what they call "CBA" beds ( Community Based Alternatives (CBA) provides home and community-based services to people who are elderly and to adults with disabilities as a cost-effective alternative to living in a nursing home. This is a program here in Texas. Waiting list of up to 2 years... don't have that much time) , however my mother would need to go into a nursing home for 30+ day before she could be moved to the "top" of the list. She doesn't have the funds to pay for the Assisted Living (which by the way is costing $2800 monthly), how can she cover the cost of the nursing home? I'm at a loss... I need advice. I have applied for Medicaid, but have not heard from them yet. I can't care for my Mother in my home, I work full-time as a "special needs" teacher. Where do I go from here? My mother has about $6000 in her bank account and that's it....please offer any assistance you can.
