Question from Anonymous Caring.com community member
I moved my mom in with me, because she needed supervision. I sold her condo and purchased a house. In a year and half she went down hill and can't do anything for herself now. She fell a few times, and was in the hospital. She also spent time in a couple of rehab centers paid for by Medicare. She needs total care, and I am unable to do it. I want to place her in a nursing home, but am afraid Medicaid will come after me. I reside in Florida, and the home is considered homestead there. When she passes can I be charge for her care, and forced to sell the house? We are joint tenants, and I would like to know if I will have to pay gift taxes on the property. She has no other assets other than $2000 for burial in the bank.
