How can I keep my stress and health under control while caregiving for my dad with Alzheimer's?

I am a caregiver for my dad who has Moderate to Mild-severe stage AD with symptoms of sundown syndrome. I have systemic lupus with complications including chronic pancreatitis. I know that stress and poor sleep can aggravate my lupus, but I find it difficult to keep my stress/depression/sleep issues under control. I was wondering if you had any extra ideas for me b/c I know that I cannot take good care of my dad if I'm not feeling well. If you could just provide me with some simple ideas, I'd be very grateful.(I use Hypnosis/Relaxation apps on my Ipod, but those just aren't enough)

Hey Chrissy. First time I've answered anything on Caring.com, but here it is. First--what other people in your life can help? Family, friends, any area support groups? If you can See also:

find a good one, a therapist can help with the stress and health issues.

Does your community have any social services/federal/state programs available? Look for Area Agency on Aging--and hope they are a good one!

Look for other stress reducers other than relaxation apps/cd's. There are many you to use to get you to sleep, keep you asleep, lessen stress; and they can be used all night or just a short time (without repetition). Subliminals and others that affect the brain can help with depression.

How about exercise? A few good walks several days a week (or more).

Do you have activities that you enjoy? Even a little distraction at a time can help--relieves stress and gives you a break to get your head together.

Alternative health/medicine resources might help your immune system.

I don't remember a time I HAVEN'T been caretaking--kudos about helping yourself to help your Dad--I still struggle mightily on this--

Take Care
