Question
Father-in-law is a narcissitic bully by nature and has worsened with age. His dementia is causing paranoia and he is irrational in his demands. He is exceptionally cruel and starting to make even more poor choices. His complete control over his invalid wife is causing her great stress and depression. At what point do you decide "enough is enough"?

How do you know when it is time to declare a parent incompetent and how is this accomplished? I need help that is why I am asking the question. My father is 81 and recently was critically ill with heart attack, pneumonia and a blood infection. He was in the hospital for six weeks and had a heart cat, defilbrillator and cleaned out a clotted artery in his neck. He also 3 sessions of dialysis to bring his kidney functions back to 60%. Dad went in acute rehab after the hospital stay as a inpatient and did great coming home within 10 days instead of 14. As he continues to improve and is at home none of the decisions that were made while he was ill were the right ones and he is very critical my nature but is much worse now. He also needs 24 hour care but in his mind thinks he can maintain living on his own. Please help! Brenda
