Hi, my 81 year old grandmother (she will be 82 3/31/11) has been under my mom, my sister, and my care for about 2 years now. She needed help getting in and out of bed, cooking, cleaning, and other everyday things. She has COPD, two broken hips, and dementia. About 24 days ago she woke up and didnt want to eat, and started choking on her water. She is a catholic and can be very religious. I have seen a side of my grandma i never thought i would see. She has said things and done things i never thought would happen. She has also been a fairly skinny and tall woman her entire life. She suffers constantly not only choking on her water but she gasp for her breath much of the time. He medcine is given to her with a teaspoon of applesauce. About twice a day. but this is the only food she is getting. She does drink a lot of water, but she chokes and gurgles on the water and apple sauce. The question i have is "How long can she be with out food?"
Most of our family has accepted that she may die, i feel as if she has too. She often yells for loved ones that have passed and also says " Dolly, The gates are opening!" Dolly is my grandmas sister that died 14 years ago.
