Gliomas are brain tumors that develop in the glial cells, which are one of the two kinds of cells that reside in the nervous system. The neuron cells in the nervous system are the responsible for transmitting and receiving messages, while the glial cells serve to support the neurons. Brain tumors can be benign, or slow growing tumors; or they can be malignant, or rapidly growing tumors that destroy brain tissue. Gliomas are further classified into groups based on the cells the tumor originated from, with the most frequently encountered type called an astrocytoma. Astrocytomas are malignant tumors and treated according to their grade or severity.
