Does Wellbutrin treat IBS?
Answers
Wellbutrin (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000970) is a medication that is primarily used to treat depression. However, there are some doctors that use Wellbutrin "off label" to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Supposedly Wellbutrin taken in small doses, lower then you would use to treat depression, has a very positive effect on people suffering from IBS. Given the painful nature of that disorder it's easy to see why people would be willing to give it a try to see if it can help them too. It is important to remember though that Wellbutrin has not been tested and cleared by the FDA as a treatment for IBS. It's meant to be used in the treatment of depression and any time you use a drug "off label" there could be unforeseen side effects which might make things even worse.
