How many bone cancer cases are there per year?
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), bone cancer is exceedingly rare and affects less than one percent of the entire population. This equates to 2,300 new cases every year in the United States. Three of the most common types of bone cancer are osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma and ESFTs. The first, osteosarcoma, typically affects people between the ages of 10 and 19. Secondly, chondrosarcoma most commonly affects adults over 40 years of age and the risk of developing this cancer increases with age. Chondrosarcoma only very rarely affects children. ESFTs affect people under the age of 19. Boys appear to be at a higher risk than females, and the tumors are uncommon in African American children.
