How do I apply for veterans' benefits?

We are an 80 year old couple living independently. I take care of my wife, who had a stroke 8 years ago. As a veteran I/we may be eligible to go to the Nevada Veterans' home when need occurs. How do I find and apply for this care when we need it? We have a living will/trust but no pre-need plan of what to do or how to apply for veterans' home assistance. Our only son is trustee but lives 1500 miles away.
