It’s true that many people who need assistance resist using a walker because they don’t like the image it portrays. There are some options that look less like a traditional aluminum walker.
But first, a quick reminder: Your parent should be assessed and advised by a physical therapist before choosing a walker. Getting the wrong walker can actually increase the risk of falling.
As for walker options, one is a three-wheeler that looks more like a triangular shopping basket with wheels. They’re usually lightweight and come with locking hand breaks. However, they aren’t ideal for someone who really requires the stability of a 4-point walker.
The other option is a four-wheel walker, also called a rollator. These walkers come in different colors and typically come with a fold-down seat. They have a sportier look and can be easily used indoors and out. A good medical supply store should carry both of these walkers. They’re also available on-line. Stylish walkers are becoming more popular, so there's more to choose from. It's worth "window shopping," to see what's avaialble. Good luck!
