Retirement Communities
What are Retirement Communities?
Active retirement communities, also known as independent living communities, offer a place for seniors to live with organized social events and recreational activities. Many retirement communities offer classes such as dance, art, ceramics or woodworking. Others are equipped with fitness facilities, golf courses, swimming pools and spas, laundry services, dining facilities, and have access to local transportation. Retirement community costs vary widely based on whether an individual rents or purchases a unit, but most independent living communities require a monthly fee for services and activities. Some senior communities are subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for low-income seniors, but waiting lists can take years to turn over. Retirement communities are best for seniors in overall good health, usually age 55 and older, or 62 and older, who wish to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.
