I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Seemed like a nice clean place, no smells like many other homes. Staff was friendly. Rooms were typical but that's to be expected. No problems encountered.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My aunt is now in Bear Hill Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. They gave us a virtual tour, and we heard good recommendations. It's also close to where we live. She moved in the last week of November. My experience with it is good. She likes it. So far, so good. No problem. The location is very good and the place is well kept. They seem to have ongoing activities, although we have just been informed that there is a Covid patient in there. They were going to have us visit, but that Covid thing happened last week, so they had to shut down the visiting. Actually the care is good; I haven't had any problems with it. I guess the building was built in the 1960s. It's a 1960s architecture and it is adjacent to a golf course. My aunt has no complaints with the food.

I visited this facility

Our friend was recently admitted as a resident. I went to visit and was not impressed at all. He hardly has any space as his roommate, a long term resident, has taken over much of the space. My friend has issues with bathroom needs, yet his bed is farthest from the bathroom. We left the room for a visit and after a little while he needed to use bathroom, like immediately! I successfully rushed him down to his room, rushed back to get help. I was told he would have to push the buzzer. I was standing right there telling them he needed help! Nope! They insisted he would need to push a buzzer to get help. While I was there, buzzers were ringing non stop with no one helping. We found the place dirty and the odor was bad. I do plan on reporting this as neglect.

Provider Response

To "Very Concerned Friend", I am genuinely sorry if your friend had problems in his room with space and the location of the bathroom. We would have gladly moved him to a bed closer to the bathroom if anyone had requested that. My recollection is that you were advised (correctly) to have him push the buzzer in his room because there may not have been any staff members immediately available to assist him, and the buzzer would alert our staff that he needed help. As you pointed out, there were other buzzers ringing at that time and without a staff member in each one of those rooms, the staff would not be instantly aware who was being helped, as the buzzers are not always immediately turned off when a person's request is responded to, especially if that person needs more than one staff member's help. In addition, it is worth noting that there are peak activity times in all hospitals and nursing facilities when--despite the hard-working staff's best efforts--people may have to wait longer than usual to have their buzzer responded to. I am also very sorry if, on the day you visited, you perceived that "the place was dirty and the odor was bad." Our housekeeping staff works diligently each day to provide a clean and odor-free environment. Even with this level of effort, there are often areas waiting to be cleaned while staff members focus on taking care of the person's immediate need first. Occasional, isolated bad odors are quite temporary and are rectified very quickly. The fact is that five of the eight reviews of Bear Hill Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on this site rank our facility extremely high on cleanliness. The reviews state, among other favorable things: "It is a clean and friendly place." "They are very particular about cleanliness throughout the building." "The facility was very clean." "Her room is very nice and clean. They are up and down the hallways all the time keeping everything clean. They are doing a very good job of it." "The facility is very clean. You always see people washing floors and walls, and never get an odor." Lastly, it should be mentioned that you never reported any issues involving neglect to any of us directly. I would of course be happy to discuss these and any other issues with you at any time. Sincerely, William E. Ring, Jr. Administrator Bear Hill Rehabilitation and Nursing Center

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother-in-law, age 97, has been a resident now for over 2 years and receives excellent treatment there. She could no longer live at home after 2 hip replacements and limited mobility now (mostly in wheelchair). It is a clean and friendly place with plenty of activities offered to keep her stimulated. She usually goes to 2 or 3 events per day (they usually have to prompt her and go get her as her short-term memory is down to about 10 minutes) and enjoys the activities. She is very outgoing and gets along wonderfully with the staff. They are very particular about cleanliness throughout the building, which feels so much better than other facilities several family members have experienced.

I visited this facility

I visited this facility recently when a family member was there for a extended stay. The facility was very clean, nurses very attentive, & my family member was very happy with her stay, i would recommend bear hill, only downfall is that it is in high demand, so openings are far and few in between.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother was in this facility for a year before she passed away. The care was excellent, the staff was always helpful and willing to make her stay comfortable. It was hard to watch my mother decline in health, but the care she got, as well as us as a family, was so kind, and thorough. Mom was always cleaned, turned and repositioned when we arrived to visit, or she was out talking to patients and staff when she was feeling up to it. The facility is very clean, you always see people washing floors and walls, and never get an odor like some other facilities we have been in. The staff was knowledgeable and always willing to go the extra mile to help us.

Bear Hill Rehabilitation and Nursing Center is sort of a laid-back place. This is where he is now. It can sometimes be difficult getting somebody to help you out. I am not impressed with the staff. They are not really helpful, like you have to really push them for something. Part of the problem I think is that my stepfather is not really a pleasant person. I left the place three or four times because he showed me that he didn't even care if I visited him when I went there to help him.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My friend is in rehab now, so she is all set. She is at Bear Hill Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. This facility is pretty close to home. They have rehab and nursing facilities, but at the same building and with the same staff that goes back and forth. The staff is very good and very helpful. She has an open wound, and they are very knowledgeable about the vacuum bandage; they're very good. Elliot, the head rehab guy, he is really good. He sees that my friend gets all the work every day. She seems to be progressing very well. The room that she is in is semi-private. There is another person with her. They both have their own television, but there is enough privacy there. They have a shared bathroom. They have enough storage area. They have chairs and what-not so that people could visit here. Her room is very nice and clean. It is not huge, but it has enough room so that you can visit. It is always clean. The staff there is really good. They are up and down the hallways all the time keeping everything clean. They are doing a very good job of it. Food is not gourmet restaurant. I wouldn't go out all the way to eat there, but it is edible. My friend would have a big meal at lunch time and small snacks at supper time. It works out well. She eats well; they feed her good.

I visited this facility

The center was very welcoming when we visited. The grounds were beautiful and there was an amazing view over the golf course next door. The staff seemed very knowledgeable and open. Although my grandfather did not end up choosing to live there, he definitely seemed to like the facility.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I never minded visiting my grandmother during her stay and I never felt uncomfortable bringing my young child to see her either. The facility was extremely clean and the staff members were always pleasant. The doctors that came into the patient's room did seem to get a little annoyed when there were family members visiting, but they still gave my grandmother the time she deserved and answered her questions while we were there. The nurses would allow me to bring some toys for my son and we would bring my grandmother outside in a wheelchair so she could sit in the sun and watch him play outside. One thing I was never too happy with was the smell of urine. It is understandable that there is incontinence in a nursing home but it seemed as if it was not properly cleaned up and disinfected because every time I visited I could smell urine while walking down the halls. Also, there were no personal laundry machines at the facility. Family members had to take my grandmothers laundry home to wash for her and that made her feel like a burden to others because she could not do it herself.
