I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My Dad fell several times, I ask one staff member what will they do to prevent this from happening again. Instead of saying they will keep a closer watch on him, she said they will lower the bed and give him the nurse bell. He fell again so I talked to another staff member Ms. Maryland (Mur-lynn) and she was outright rude . I ask her can they check on him more she said they don't have cameras, bed alarms and they don't restrain them. I didn't ask her that just a little more time to check on him she told me if you want 24 hrs service for him take him out and pay someone to do it. So unprofessional and disrespectful.

Hi. My grandmother is in this facility. I’m thankful that they had a bed for her but that’s all. First, she fell out of her bed and needed returned to the hospital for stitches. Now she has bruises and sores on her body. I agree with the other post that this facility waits until Friday to tell you your insurance ran out and We were given 2 days to remove my grandmother. Thank goodness for appeal rights because this facility’s administration are cruel. I pray we can resolve my grandmothers care. And I pray for the other residents at this facility.

Provider Response

They don't change the rooms garbage cans. It's disgusting. My mother's bed sheets are not changed nor is her portable toilet. The food seems from fair to good. My mother came back after being there in 2011 for a short time. Now she's there on a more lengthly basis. I don't like it.

I am a friend or relative of resident

I picked Shadyside ManorCare because of their overall rating, 4 stars if I'm not mistaking. Well, Please do not go by the rating only. Me deciding to place my mom there was so wrong. The best staff member I encountered was the evening front desk receptionist, I believe her name was Marlene. Just wonderful. The Administration Staff, they will communicate with you, within a day or so that the insurance is about to run out. It is very hard to communicate with the Administrative staff there. When you leave specific information on where you can be reached, they do the opposite, and then complain that they cannot reach you. Really strange. Now some of the nursing staff was ok. That's about all I can say. No one ever comes and tells you anything about your loved one, if they see you, they go the other way, and if you come in during evening hours and you have questions, it seems everyone avoids you. They do not acknowledge you unless you say, EXCUSE ME, then you get a response like, " I'll see who her aide is, or we don't have anything like that, I will put in a request to the doctor. The staff does not seem to know anything, and they don't care to know. My mom was in and out of Shadyside Manorcare. To the Hospital a few times and then returned to Shadyside ManorCare. this last time, her legs were really swollen, and she has a number of health issues that would cause this. I inquired to speak to the doctor or someone, I never got a response. I also ask the nurse if they could provide my mom with the special hose, to help get rid of the swelling. no hose, no response, no nothing. I then had my mom transferred to another facility and my mom's legs went down within a 24hr period. I was so happy. It seems my mom was not getting all of the care she needed. Now, don't get me wrong, I thank the staff that did care for my mom while she was at Shadyside ManorCare, but I just feel that all staff members are not created equal. You have some that are hard working and willing to go the distance for the patients that rely on them for help, even though they are so overworked. Then you have the others who clock in for their hours take all their cigarette brakes and do as less work as possible. I hope this is not the work ethic that is encouraged by Shadyside ManorCARE.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I was a resident on the 3rd floor for two months following trauma surgery for broken hip and wrist. The staff care was very good, the managers of the staff care was also very good, the rehab folks were excellent to me. Everyone was very supportive and kind, polite, clean and careful. In truth this location and the care I received were a lifesaver for me. I never once saw an unkindness to a patient, most calls for help were responded to appropriately. The physical 'plant' is a bit non-cold in design, but it is all very clean and kept that way daily in spite of some really ill residents. I could go on and on because there are many positives here in this particular facility. In 60 some days I had maybe 3-4 problems, and all were well addressed. If needs be, I'll return or recommend in confidence.

His doctor chose ManorCare for my father-in-law. He is 82 and had two surgeries. He did well there for 14 weeks on and off. The staff were fabulous. They handled him extremely well. He enjoyed the food and he enjoyed the stay there.

This place is poorly run, They accept respite patients without reviewing patient info and don't give staff info on new patients until they walk in the door, even though they had the info for several days. Then they refuse to keep the patient because it is not proper placement for them, leaving the family with no options.

I wish I had known someone who had been there before I placed My family member there , then I would have been more at ease leaving my family in their hands. But, I have grown to see that I don't have to worry so much about the care given there. Most of the nurses that I have talked and interacted with, are very caring and knowledgeable. The staff is kind and tries to be accommodating .They schedule monthly meetings with the patient and family to discuss any thing that has occurred that month with medications, diet, physical health ,and mental health. It is also a question and answer session to help ease any fears and answer any questions. They also have monthly activities the patients can get involved in to stimulate their senses or to fight boredom.I feel my family is in good hands even if they can't be mine.
