I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Waterside Health & Rehab Center is so much better than the other place. My husband gets warm food instead of cold food. It's warm and welcoming when you step inside. The staff has a whole different outlook on life. They are positive, and they do their best to keep my husband and myself apprised of anything that's happening, what they think needs to be done, and what have you. I couldn't say anything else but from the other two nursing homes he's been in, this is a 180-degree turn. It's just like night and day and Waterside is the day. They offer spiritual time with a church. They offer Bible study, bingo, and one-on-one visitation. They have more activities than a lot of places do. There is some food because my husband is very picky, and he didn't like it. However, he said, at least it's warm. Most of the time, the food is OK. He is legally blind, so he couldn't eat the spaghetti and the nurses didn't help him. That's no better or worse than what he's been at before. He didn't expect them to help him.

I visited this facility

I have seen many Nursing homes across the nation and I am a bit confused concerning the previous reviews of this facility . It is by far the cleanest I have seen and it doesn’t smell of urine like the others. The staff and nurses are very compassionate and caring toward my mother who is almost 102 years old. The only thing I have heard her complain about is the food , which she says is tasteless. She is an awesome cook who knows how to season food so I understand her disdain. At her age, she should not be denied salt and other spices! Let her enjoy her meals. She has a DNR on file and is not concerned about dying, especially from the things she eat. Before you complain about this facility, visit some others. I have sang for and ministered to the elderly in many facilities and would not hesitate to recommend this place. If they’ve had issues in the past, they have obviously been addressed and corrected! A huge thank you to Miranda, Ashley, and many others whom i’ve Met! You’re awesome! God bless you. Joseph

My father spent 12 days here after a stroke, and 2 days ago he was returned to the hospital upon our request. He was so severely malnourished and dehydrated that the ambulance attendant asked if he had signed a Do Not Resuscitate order. After 30 minutes on an IV he was alert and coherent. He lost 20 lbs in 12 days. It will take him a long time to recover from the severe neglect at this facility. They are understaffed, with only a few competent members on the staff. My father was only seen by a doctor 2 times in 12 days, even when it was known he had medical issues. The family had to beg for IV fluids to be administered when we realized he was deteriorating so rapidly, and it took 5 hours to get them. Do NOT send your loved ones here if you care about them. We were there every single day, all day long, and couldn't prevent the horror from happening to my father. It breaks my heart to think of the people who are there that don't have anyone to advocate for them.

I visited this facility

I visited Sentara. I think there were not enough staff, and they weren't engaged. I was not impressed at all. I would not recommend it at all. They need to improve on caring for the patients.

This is my experience --Would never recommend!!! Rated 1 star but only because it would not allow me to rate lower. Terrible experience for my loved one. Bedridden, unable to speak, or see, on a ventilator and feeding tube. Poor quality of care. No cooperation from center to attempt to get her therapy or anything beyond having her sedated and an object in a bed to collect funds. Diagnosed by a hospital on 1 of 4 emergency room visits in a 6 month period and diagnosed by the hospital as having contracted a STD. Of course I could not get a return call from the center’s administration and when APS got involved, the facility of course denied it and said she must have had this floating around in her body or was misdiagnosed—not possible as before she was placed there, she could speak and was very vocal about what happened to her and her daily activities. Oh yes, in a meeting with APS, they even said it was possibly from not being cleaned properly. A circus of excuses and denial….If your loved one cannot speak, see or protect themselves…place them elsewhere unless you have the means to have someone there with them almost constantly. I have pictures of the poor quality of care I’ve found and had to request they attend my family member--and they can’t dispute photos.

This place is horrible, some of the staff are leaving the facility because of their management. Some of the nurses and lpn are good but more of them are bad workers, my love one situation look got worse, her bedsore got worse it didn't get heal because they don't turn her what is supposed to be for every 2 hours, I notice this because most of the day on the weekend I stayed there. Her UTI infection look don't get heal because her urine still smell bad, she don't have this kind of smell when we were in Va.Beach general Hospital. I could say the administration should have pay attention to this kind of matters. If I could pull out my love one from this nursing home I will before she get worse. To all staff, If your love one are sick try to bring in to this facility for their care, you experience it and you will be disappointed.

Sentera Nursing Center has close proximity to relatives, so we chose it. She's been there for a couple of months now. We saw that everything there was fine and clean. I actually have a lawyer who, obviously for a fee, stops in every couple of months to check on my mom and the area. She is in a double room for more than assisted living. It's for people who need progressive help and for those with Alzheimer's or dementia. The room itself is approximately the same size as where my mom was prior to that. It also has a bathroom. The food is individually served three times a day in the dining area. It's like going to a small or medium-sized restaurant. Part of the nursing care is to make sure they eat. The strong point is they have a wider connection with the hospital, but the downside is things get lost sometimes. It's up to the family members to pay attention to things. In addition, the technical staff are more of a problem; the nursing staff are caring, and I haven't had any problems with them. Where my mother is right now, she will probably stay for the rest of her life because she has Alzheimer's.

Horrible! The smell of urine hits you in the face the moment you walk in. I went to visit my mother there and she was in the bed at 10am. When I went to get her dressed (10am and still not done) she had filthy sheets and had 2 pairs of depends on. Both her depends were soaking wet. She told me that her sheets had not been changed in quite a while. Getting her out of there ASAP!
