I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

It was very difficult to have my husband admitted to the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas Veterans Home in McAllen, Texas. I just want to say the love, compassion, helpfulness, dedication by everyone (office staff, medical staff, kitchen staff, maintenance staff, and even the residents) were beyond my expectations. I highly recommend this facility. Everyone treats the residents as "heros", which they are. On behalf of my friends and family, on January 26, 2024, a beautiful, mahogany, hand carved anchor by a local artist was dedicated to the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas Veterans Home, McAllen, Texas, in memory of my husband. . A special thank you to all that donated to make this dedication possible. It is displayed in the hallway right outside the chapel. You will be missed but not forgotten. “Fair Winds and Following Seas”.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I love Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home. I go there all the time. It's a lovely place. I recommend it to veterans. It's clean and the food is pretty good. They always have stuff to do. It's just a nice place for veterans to be at. When you walk in, it has nice decor, has a lot of newspaper clippings and actual real suits framed from the actual veteran that fought in the war, and it just looks nice. It doesn't smell. It smells nice and fresh because they shampoo the carpets. They have a quiet room where you can go in there with your family members and watch TV or talk on the phone and maybe call another relative. There's a library with a bunch of books you can read. They have a big old living room with a big old screen TV where the families can also sit and watch TV, watch movies, and then they have an activity room as well. They take them to Walmart and nice stores every other week. I have a lot of respect for that facility every time I go. They're very friendly. It has a very nice appearance. The structure is nice. They keep up with it. Everything looks good. I don't have any complaints about that facility at all. My friend didn't want to eat the soup there, so they asked me if I wanted the soup, I tried it, and it was pretty good. It's kind of homemade. It's like they make it there. They make everything fresh there. When I've gone there in the morning, you could smell the cooking. I recommend it to any veteran and the pricing is way cheaper than the other place. The staff was very knowledgeable, and friendly, and asked you if you needed help. If I'm bringing in groceries or something for my friend, they'll help you. They'll get a cart for you and help you out. They just had Thanksgiving there. They invited us, called us and sent us lettercards for families.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father is a resident of Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home. It's well laid out, the plans that they have for the facility. The upkeep seems well. As soon as you walk in, it's inviting and clean. When you walk into the nursing home, you're not put off by the smell. It's well ventilated, well taken care of. I didn't pick up any of the usual smells that you get when you're in a nursing home. The staff was friendly, they're knowledgeable. They were very nice, and they seemed aware what my father needed. They are up to date with things that were going on, and that's on every 30 minutes, considering the care he needed. The dining area looked fine, although my father is not eating at the dining area. They have a schedule posted, a calendar, and it seems that it's well rounded enough for what the patients need, depending on what their disabilities are.

Rooms were okay. Some staff do NOT speak English or need to be reminded to speak English often. Lacking in a variety of activities and almost NO community amenities. A FEW staff can be ranked average and very, very few are above average. 1 per cent rank excellent! Their food is barely edible, breakfast is the exception. Upon meeting with the different administrative heads and discussing our concern they haven’t been able to carry out there plans to improve. They do listen—— however there is never a per amend redirection! Our resident repeats and asks over and over and over again! Our options are limited. He is sad ,lonely and sees a lack of empathy from most. We try to stay positive, visit daily and plan for better days. I don’t see the same happening from this facility.

I visited this facility

I wasn't very happy with the accommodations at Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home. The bed I was going to live on was half the size of a hospital bed, and I was going to share a room with another gentleman separated by a curtain. It's pretty big, and there were a lot of women there. It's a nursing home and we're not allowed to drive anywhere. We're only allowed to leave 14 times a year. If you're 80+ years old, I would give it a score of 100. It's very nice, and they even invited me to lunch, which was really good food. Everything else was excellent except for the bed, and it's not for me. It's too much of a hospital scene for me. I need more of a place where residents can come and go. The staff who showed me around was very good and very nice.

The training nurses receive are obviously very little. My father is/ was a patient there. Every day that I wasn’t working or when I got off work, I would go see him. There was a time when I had hip surgery and could not be there but I called him. One day I called and spoke to a nurse. The nurse told me he had not voided in 24 hours and they were waiting for the Dr to call back. I told them, don’t wait! Move him to the hospital now. My Dad passed away shortly after that because of kidney issues! Him not voiding should have been caught 12 hours prior.

I am a past client of this provider

I had my parents at a senior community, but they just passed away. They lived at Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home for about five years. Everything was very, very good. We had good experiences. The staff was very caring to their patients. Everything was always very, very clean. Of course, it was a very new facility. A lot of the times when we are in a nursing home there is this certain smell, but this one never had that. It was always clean. It was just the layout, which was very comfortable to accommodate everybody. Oh yes, I would recommend them. Of course, the qualification is that you have to be a veteran, not everybody could go in there. Maybe they should have more activities for the residents especially on the weekends.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Before my father passed away, he was at Veterans Home. We had come across it through the VA McAllen's Clinic and their website. I liked that it was spacious and clean. The staff was very pleasant. My father had a private room, and it was very nice. He had physical therapy daily, and the physical therapists were outstanding. I can't say enough of how wonderful they were in working with him. One other activity my father was able to participate in was their church service. They had Catholic Mass on Fridays, which was followed by the rosary, so that was great.
