I visited this facility

The Gables on Pelham was bigger and had more people to watch. It was a nice and clean facility, but I prefer a little smaller and a little friendlier place. The staff were very nice. They were excellent. I saw a single occupancy room. They were having a holiday party thing, so everybody was happy, clean, and dressed up in costumes. It seemed as if the residents there in the memory care facility were well looked after. Their building was a bit different. To get into the memory care facility, you had to have an attendant let you in. They would not give you a code number. Someone would have to let you in and let you out every time. It may have been a more secure method, but I didn't like it.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother has been a resident at Gables on Pelham for over 9 years. Recently, she had a health issue that required the combined efforts of Cynethia (Gables nurse), another nurse (thanks Matthew) , CNAs, Kirk (director at Gables) and family members. Thankfully, I’m happy to report that this issue has been resolved. Cynethia dealt with a lot of documentation during this process. She answered our calls and texts in a caring, professional manner. Devin plans a wide variety of activities and field trips. He goes above and beyond to see that the residents are involved. He and his staff also do a wonderful job with events involving the families. Kirk, the director, is friendly and approachable when you have a concern. He cares for the residents and their families. The CNAs and MedTechs show a genuine interest and concern for my mother. She is happy here and thinks of them as her extended family. Between my mother’s 9 years and my mother-in-law’s 5 years at another facility, I have learned there is no perfect facility. The same is true about schools, churches, and any business. They can’t fix something if they don’t know about it. I can only comment about our experiences. In closing, my mother is happy, safe and cared for.We have made and continue to make many happy memories at Gables on Pelham.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Just moved my mother-in-law out of the Gables. I'll stick to the facts: -her room was consistently over the allowed temperature by DHEC. Temps for several weeks exceeded 74 degrees. I had to pick her up and miss work a few times due to the uncomfortable situation in her room. -the Director (Sue) said someone accidentally turned on the "heat." That was a bold lie. The hallway was consistently over 80 degrees and the employees told me it stayed very hot on the 3rd floor. -we moved her to a 2nd floor room. It too was warm and dirty. I had to clean the room once moved in. Housekeeping at this facility is terrible. I had to scrub walls, steam clean carpets and remove grime from the shower & bathroom. -Meals: the food is predominately sandwiches. I checked on the meals on many occasions. My mother complained about how bad the food was...there are no ala cart anytime menu items available. She was told they were out of ice cream. -Social: there are no family / resident socials. There are virtually no special events for the residents. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthdays are not celebrated or recognized. I brought in Cake and balloons and staged our own birthday party in the dining hall. -Staff: our family witnessed them sit around on their cell phones during almost every visit. We were charged a $600 care fee and the only time any person ever came to her room was to distribute meds. -The real stinger: an associate had the nerve to tell her that her hair appeared dirty...why yes, her room was 76 degrees and she was very warm. -Medical: we had orders for physical therapy. They never left her room for therapy and never got her moving. Very poor job with respect to medical case management. The new facility we moved to is so much better, compassionate and serves proper dietary meals.

Provider Response

At The Gables on Pelham, my daily goal is to ensure the safety and care of the residents. We strive to make immediate corrections when residents bring their concerns to our attention, seek to identify any other areas that may be affected by similar concerns and then monitor the changes to ensure they are being maintained. As the new Executive Director, I am committed to The Gables on Pelham community, the residents, families and our staff. I am truly sorry your mother-in-law’s stay with us was not up to your standards or mine. If you would like to speak with me about these issues more in depth, I can be reached via telephone. We wish you and your family all the best in your new community. Kirk Broome, Executive Director

My mother was here for 10 years and recently passed away. I want to thank Cynethia, the Director of Health and Wellness for always being there for "us". I would call and she would immediately return my call and would help in any way that she could! There were some other employees that were helpful, however, Cynethia was the one behind what got done and got done promptly. She is an outstanding, caring person who needs to be recognized. Her job is a very difficult one and she is does an amazing job! She's a keeper!

I'd like to give a shout out to the Assisted Living Nurse/Wellness Coordinator Cynethia Allison. She's still fairly new to her position in this community, but I've been very impressed with how quickly she has become familiar with the residents, their medical needs, and personalities. Cynethia is courteous, very professional, and easy to communicate with, making herself available for in-person meetings, by phone and text which is wonderful when there are time sensitive issues. She helped sort through some medication refill issues which occurred during a change in the health care provider, and is pro-active with engaging with the MD who does rounds to better coordinate my parent's care and making sure accurate information is provided to the doctor. She has also recognized some needs that will improve the residents' health care and is working on the implementation, such as adding a visiting dentist making it easier for residents and family who transport them to outside appointments. I sleep better at night knowing Cynethia is on the job!

In my families opinion, this facility is unsanitary and malodorous. There is a lot of carpet, and housekeeping stated they do not own a carpet cleaner. For our Mom’s short stay (mid-Oct 2021 through early Jan 2022), there was an odor that permeated the 2nd floor for 2 weeks without explanation. Even on move-out, mgt offered no explanation or schedule for repair. In my families opinion, the food is inadequate, without balance, and does not meet dietary needs. Our Mom stated she requested salads and was told various ingredients were unavailable. Our Mom stated she was never able to order items shown on the posted menu. In my families opinion, the staff including the Executive Director (Sue) and the Wellness Director (also the ALF nurse, Loran) are without empathy or warmth. In my families opinion, this facility should be avoided at this time. In my families opinion and experience, our loved one is better cared for elsewhere.

I visited this facility

I toured The Gables on Pelham. They are coming out this week to my ex-husband's home to assist him in the skilled nursing department. We're not sure what our options will be going forward, but that was one that is very close to our location, and they have the total spectrum of continuing care like independent, assisted, skilled, and memory. At the time we were looking, we were hoping it might be an assisted level. It turns out, it's not, so that moved us to the skilled level. The person who gave us the tour was not quite as gracious as maybe some of the other ones were, although she did eventually get back. I think it was a day or two before I heard back, and they seemed to have remembered what I needed. I wanted to see the skilled nursing section and because they did not have a bed available, I never saw even the section where they are. She showed me an assisted room, and I felt like it was too small and probably not adequate. But I wanted to see the other alternatives as well, and because they did not have a bed available, I never got to see that. The surrounding is OK. It's nothing outstanding. It looks like a kind of a place for an 80- or a 90-year-old rather than a 70-year-old. The decorations have been worn and worn-looking and haven't been refreshed cosmetically for a long time. But that was OK; that's all right. The dining area looked like a very pleasant place. As to what extent my ex-husband would be in a position to make use of it was very doubtful back at that point, and it's even more doubtful now. He would be more confined to either his room or a limited area that someone else would have to get him there. He was not going to be in a position to get himself from wherever he was to this dining room or any dining room. I saw lots of calendar listings with places to go and things to do. I wasn't especially interested because we're just not at that point, but they were pushing them. They had a group meeting in the lobby while we were there.

It was excellent, they were really good, and I didn't have any complaints. My mom is in there. They are friendly, and I would recommend them to anybody. They sing, they play piano, someone comes in that plays the guitar, they play bingo, and they have different things. The dining area is clean, the food is good, she's on pureed diet, and it's excellent.

It was nice. They have events, and they go places and do things. They have a nice dining area. The main person that took me and my son around on the tour was very nice and very accommodating. They have trips and social gatherings. The place is clean and nice, and each person has their own little space that’s theirs to decorate.

It is very nice and friendly. The staff members are great, and they work well with my mom. There are lots of activities, and my mom participates in all of them, which is great. My mom has a very nice one-bedroom/living area kind of efficiency unit. I saw a bigger room one time there, and it was very nice and ample, too. The food is very good.

They had skilled nursing because hospice had told us my mother needed more care than assisted living, but they also wouldn't accept her because they said she needed 24 hours a day care, and they could not provide that. The rooms were very nice and clean, and the people were friendly.

It has nice facilities. It has a patio area that was very nice. It also has nice recreational and dining room areas. It has a library as well. They have a fair amount of opportunities as well for the resident. They show movies and they have people coming in the facility.

I visited this facility

The rooms are not very large, but they are nice. It is like a hotel setting, so it is very nice. The staff is very caring and very friendly. The food smelled wonderful when I walked in, and usually you don't notice that, but with the seasoning and the stuff that they use, the food smells really, really wonderful. My mother is in the locked unit because she couldn't be out, but they have an excellent woman who is leading the activities. She reads to them, plays memory games with them, and then they reminisce about the old days. One of the nice things is they have, like some of the women were telephone operators, they have one of those machines there so they can see it and remember what they did in their younger days. They have a sewing machine, and they have a formal, so that the women can remember the formal parties and things that they went to. And, they allowed my mother to have her cat in this place.

I visited this facility

It was larger and a little bit more institutional but it was very nice. They did have a two-bedroom which was what I was looking for. The room sizes configuration were sort of strange but they were neat and well kept. They had three floors of apartment so I looked at several of them. I liked the dining room, it was large and very sunny. It was continuous with the living room and the library, so it gave a feeling of real, open spaciousness. The food smelled wonderful but I didn’t taste it. I heard a lot of good comments from the residents.

I was very impressed. They're outstanding. They have a big living room, they have entertainment every day, and they have games. The food is outstanding. They're doing a great job. But I don't want to go to any facility yet until I absolutely have to.
