I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother has been there three days. Two of the days I get a call saying she fell trying to go to the bathroom by herself. I walk in and she is sitting in a walker without underwear or pants on. The call light was on for 20 minutes and no one came in to see if something was wrong. Floor was dirty every day that I visited. Patients are served on a styrofoam plate.

I had a pretty good opinion of East Lake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. My father was there for rehab after a fall, and the physical therapists, occupational therapists, and aides were very good. One of the aides actually took me into their Alzheimer's unit to see what it was like, and it was a very nice area. I'm talking about the private pay patients. The cleanliness and everything, we didn't have any concerns about that, but he didn't like the food. They did have some activities, but he was not really terribly interested in participating in them because he was in pain. They have a private room for when you want to bring in family, they have activity rooms, and they have a beauty shop and barber services as well.

East Lake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a very nice facility. My wife is getting good service over there. She can't stand and she can't walk, so she doesn't get involved in any of the activities, but they have a nice activities group and they take the residents to various places. They're bringing her down to see my place and to have lunch here. I eat lunch with her and the food is very good.

I am/was a resident of this facility

My experience at this facility as a resident was mixed. One thing that was alarming to me was the med errors that happened to me within the first 3 weeks I was there. I always checked the meds I was given, as I know what they should look like and their purpose. Two times I was given medications I did not recognize. I refused them. Another time I was given a double dose of a medication. I accepted only one of the capsules. I reported these events to the Director of Nursing.. I don't know how to fix this problem. If a resident has a cognitive malfunction, and does not have a family or friend to advocate for him or her, I guess nothing much can be done. For the most part, patient care was more than adequate. I believe the nurses and CNA's really liked the residents and providing quality resident care was a calling to them. . But the ratio of CNAs to residents was seriously compromised. Often there was only one CNA working 2 halls. I believe this is an administrative problem. One afternoon I heard a resident about 4 doors down from me calling for help. This went on for at least 15 minutes. I went to her room to discover that she was in the bathroom and could not help herself. I alerted the nurse who told me the only CNA on duty was giving someone a shower. The nurse then took care of the resident. The food was not always appetizing. Vegetables were overcooked. There was the option of sending it back but after waiting an hour or more for food to be served, sending it back only made the wait longer. At times, the food was cold when it reached the resident. Residents were asked about their likes and dislikes. This information was printed out and a copy was given to each resident at each meal However, it is doubtful that the kitchen staff paid any attention to the printouts because more often than not, the "dislikes" were served. The Physical Therapy was excellent. I'd give it 5 stars!. The therapists were skilled, compassionate and encouraging! I couldn't ask for any better!. The activities program is a plus. There were musical entertainment; a church service, games and discussion groups. The facility has wifi for residents. Several of the hallways were lined with empty wheelchairs, making it difficult to navigate, especially for those who used wheelchairs. The bathrooms are too small to permit a wheelchair to turn around.

I wouldn’t recommend East Lake; I wasn’t satisfied with the way things were there. I was there every day, and he was taken care of, but when he passed, they started sending me all kinds of bills from there that I don’t feel like we owe. They could be a little cleaner for one thing, and secondly when we took him in there, they didn’t clean. The first months we paid out of pocket because he has a little bit of money in the bank, and then after that Medicaid was supposed to pick up, but he passed away. He was only there 17 or 18 days. After he passed away, I thought we would be getting a refund for the money that we had overpaid, and they send us bills for things that they come up with that we had pay out of pocket. They took all the money that was supposed to be a refund. I felt like it should be a refund, and my sister felt too as well. When I went in there, I told him that he had a 9 day supply of his medications that he took at home, and I was told that I could take them over there, but when I asked one of the nurses one day about the medication giving, she said that "By law we can’t do that." I am not pleased with them. I thought it would be a good place, but I personally wouldn’t recommend that now.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mom was admitted Feb 2013. The memory care unit and staff was great but....the forced physical therapy injured her to the point extra staff was needed to help her in and out of bed, so they required that she be moving to the nursing home side. Ugh! This made matters worse. I took her for x-rays on her back and it showed back fractures, which she did not have prior. Thanks physical therapy! Also, my mom's complaints of non-attentiveness in the evening when she pressed the nurse button prompted me to get a spy devise to see if it was true. Um, yep! One staff in particular would come in and turn off her light and walk back out as she carried her bag of chips eating. (small A.A. gal) She did this 3 times before actually helping her to the bathroom in a rough manner. Soon after finding that bit of info, we took her out!!! I wish the people to accepted jobs there actually had a heart for the job and the patients!

Care is substandard. The CNA staff is rude. Patients wait extended periods of time for care especially in the evening. The Rehab group is fabulous, too bad they can't train the rest of the staff to be caring and compassionate. One star is too high of a rating for this facility!

I visited this facility

My mother-in-law stayed at East Lake for rehab. For me it was only a nursing home and rehab, not assisted living. On their plus side, their rehab situation was outstanding. They were very caring on that side. However, once you reached the point that you could no longer stay on rehab and you had to go in a nursing care situation, I would never put someone I loved there. Their nursing home care side was very depressing. While, the shared rooms in the rehab side were separated by a wall so they had privacy, on the nursing home, though they might have single rooms, the double rooms only had a curtain that separates it and things just looked shabby and depressing. The food, even on the rehab side, nothing tasted good. It all looked very unappetizing.

I have had basically good experiences with this facilty, nothing is perfect. They are pretty much hands on and the patients dont wait too long for care. I have had experiences where as they say they will do something like go get the patient a bandaid for example and you never see them again, but these are the exceptions not the rule. the nurses for the most part seem caring, some treat it like a job and you can tell and others genuinely care. I would recommend the facility to others they do try to keep the patients involved and active they have a rehab area and they have daily events for the residence, I do sense there is a lot of caring people at this facility. This establishment began in 1988 so it has been around quite a long time.

I visited this facility

Not enough staff with the number of seniors that were there when I visited. Took nurses awhile to respond to a senior that had their light on. Other than that place was clean, friendly atmosphere, good activities for the seniors. Did not see an activities board that allowed the seniors to plan ahead but I might of missed it?

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My grandmother has to stay in this miserable place and it makes me feel terrible. Every time I go to see her I grow to hate the place more and more. The staff is most of the time not around, they don't help out with much when the residents need it. They have beeping devices that go off if someone leaves a bed or their wheel chair. I heard one going off for 5-10 minutes, I left before I could notice anyone go in there and help the person out. From what I've seen they barely help the residents with going to the bathroom if they need to, or being put in bed. It's really a shot in the dark if anyone is going to be available to help. My grandma is allergic to peanuts, the cooking staff gave her a PEANUT butter cookie that she ended up eating half of before she noticed it was peanut butter. It says right on the slip of paper that comes with her meal that she is allergic to peanuts. Luckily she didn't have a very bad reaction to it. It wasn't the first time this has happened either, just the first time she actually ate it. We're there most of the time when she gets dinner, so we can tell if the cookie is peanut butter or not. Just so happened to get there late this time. The person who's usually at the nurse's station is very very rude and almost always looks as if she hates being there. One of the people at the front desk is also sometimes very rude. I've also seen bruising on my grandma that she claims was because the staff weren't careful, now she has some dementia so I don't know if that's true or not, but if so they need to be more careful. She has also claimed to have things stolen from her and my dad has said himself that she had 20 dollars that went missing one day. They're okay at providing certain things for her, like towels, bibs, pillows, blankets, etc. Their rooms are decently sized and don't feel too crowded. The bathrooms are also pretty nice, basic, but nice. This place would be great if it weren't for the staff, they ruin this place for me.
