Concordia at Sumner

This facility looks beautiful both inside and out. It’s also usually very clean. There are a handful of sweet and compassionate employees who enjoy their jobs and fulfill the role with competence. Sadly there are enough employees who do otherwise and will literally ruin your loved one’s time here. The lack of initiative and effort has poorly impacted my grandmother’s health. At 95 and a stroke victim she was expected to do much more than she should have which resulted in three falls. We hired an outside resource to keep my grandmother company. Soon the nursing staff quickly took to abuse that resource and relied on those people to provide grandma’s care. Whilst we valued preserving grandma’s independence, it was already dwindling when she was admitted 9 months ago. One particular aide refused to fed my grandmother saying she could do it herself. This meant my almost blind with significantly reduced dexterity grandma had to paw for food on her tray and finger fed herself. The aide came in and told me not to fed her because it’s makes her life more difficult. We are over it. We’re moving her to a new facility, at 96 years of age. Ridiculous! I haven’t even begun to address the quality of food and lack of communication. The last time she fell we were never called. Her report indicated that family was contacted. We were not and the nurse admitted she never called. Spare your family member! Do not use this facility! We tried calling administration both locally and nationally. We ended up calling the state department for elderly. I looked at 28 places before we made a decision. This is not a cheap facility. There is no excuse. My grandmother is a human being and deserves better!

My husband I were in this facility about 20 minutes. After getting checked in we met with the Marketing person. After a few minutes, she informed us that my husband and I would not be able to be at Concordia because we were a same sex couple, which is not allowed by their Lutheran Missouri Synod Board. The lady was most apologetic and embarrassed to have to tell us this. However, it was very professional of her to tell us upfront before we toured the place.

I went to Concordia at Sumner. I took a friend with me, and the minute we went in she turned to me and she said, "If you move here, I'm never coming to visit you." It's too overwhelming, I mean, it looks like they want to be an English country manor set out in an Ohio urban area. It was all very nice and posh, but it just wasn't me. It was also that you had to pay one hundred and fifteen thousand dollars to get in and they'll give part of it back to you if you leave soon. But then they're having a special so it came out to like almost two thousand dollars a month, which I could probably eke out. The tours were guided by residents and it was a very nice tour. They have a swimming pool, a fitness room, they have activities, and it's very nicely decorated. They have lots of little tiny like miniature lobbies, which is a good feature in each of the floors of each of the buildings. But I saw only one human being other than the other visitors. Where are the residents? It was more like a posh setting. The apartments were nice.

We went to Concordia at Sumner. Their hallways are very long and it is more than one story. As we looked over the place, I could not see my husband be in a room on the second floor and then having to walk a long hallway to get to an elevator to go downstairs. It is very inconvenient as far as we are concerned. Nevertheless, it ranked very high. They had a musical group when we visited. The dining facility seemed to be nice. They had an area where people could walk. It was very well landscaped. When you looked out the window it had a pleasant atmosphere. However, you have to walk quite far to get to the parking. The parking close to the entrance was pretty full, so there aren't often any close places to park. I would give the staff a five because they definitely knew what they were talking about and they were pleasant. The place was very clean. The building hadn't been there the longest, but it was very well decorated and very nice.

My mother had short-term skilled nursing at Concordia at Sumner. It's a beautiful facility, and everybody there had private rooms. They had a little sitting area and a lot of good activities for the residents. There were some good staff members and some great aides, but usually the night staff was not so good. They had one staff member that was rude to the patients and did not care at all. The food was pretty good, but they were short on staff members. There was one time when they brought lunch to my mother in her room, and she told the staff member that she had to go to the bathroom. They told her they were busy so she soiled her pants and had to sit in it for an hour. It's supposedly one of the better nursing homes, but they had staff members that didn't need to be there plus they were understaffed. We were under the impression that any transportation was part of the normal services, but we found out they had charged us for it.

My wife has moved into Concordia at Sumner. It is very good. The facilities are excellent. The staff is very good. The food is very good. My only complaint, and I understand that it is an industry-wide problem, is the staffing. Like over Thanksgiving they were short-staffed.The ones who work, who put in the hours, do a very good job. It is a beautiful place. They're currently expanding their independent living. The assisted living and skilled nursing facilities are four separate buildings and they're all one story. There are 24 residents roughly in each building. They each have their own dining room. The place is excellent. They have excellent activities. We have gone to some of the musical programs they put on. They put on at least one musical program a week. They have almost an activity every afternoon for those who want to participate.
