Lost Our Mom

1

June 22, 2021

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Our Mom had a blood pressure reading of 210/90 and pulse fluctuating between 80 to 130; known to have A Fib. and yet - they did not send her to the ER - they did nothing but keep her in her bed. We as a family had to fight to get our Mom sent to the ER. It was too late - the damage had been done ( stroke ). The place looks nice - and everyone acts friendly and caring. But the bottom line is that the care when you need it is not there.

Terrible care. My mother had to call her other daughter to call 911 for her to go to the hospital. My mother knew she was very sick, fever for a week, chills, sweats and bad wheezing. Staff did nothing and nobody saw nor treated her. Once at the hospital, she was admitted with pneumonia. My mother is also very dehydrated. Last week I called and left 5 voice mails to schedule an appointment to see my mother, not one call was returned. They just collect the money but do not provide sufficient care. Had my mother not had my sister call 911 she may have laid there and died. Inadequate care.

The staff at Stafford is very friendly and nice. My mother is in a private room. They have activities for a central community room and an exercise room. Right now, we're not allowed to go in, so you cannot really do visits. We visit at the window; we go to the window and talk back and forth through the window. We're not allowed into the building yet because of COVID.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My young senior family member suffered a stroke. Her physician recommended she go to this facility to rehabilitate. Sadly, she died of a C diff infection/colitis. Her hair was very thin and greasy, and she had several symptoms that were ignored. The infection was advanced by the time she was hospitalized, and she had emergency surgery to remove colon, and was placed on life support which sadly, we had to stop. She suffered immensely prior to her death. Nursing homes need to be held accountable for not isolating and controlling the spread of very contagious infections and for not noticing abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea as abnormal. They need to be required to do testing on all residents who have diarrhea after a course of antibiotics for C-DIFF. My loved ones well being was not cared for with the standard of quality care a resident should receive when paying for care. They were not able to provide the specialized extra care my loved one needed as she continued to get sicker because of an infection. Before placing anyone in a skilled nursing facility make sure you look at all department of health inspections and make certain the facility is using proper precautions to prevent and control the spread of infections. The day nurse who cared for her was put off by my question on her dehydration. She said, "There is a pitcher of water in her room", you give it to her. "It's not my problem". She totally changed my opinion on what type of care my loved one was probably receiving if family wasn't around to assist her. Two staff members were rude. This is not a place to send a loved one who is bedridden from what we experienced.

My sister was at Stafford Healthcare. The staff was kind and friendly and did a wonderful job with her care. They were excellent! I would give them a high rating.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My father was admitted to this facility in August of this year after having a fall at home. Initially the staff were attentive, but as the days went on I became more and more concerned about the lack of assesment within the nursing department. On several occaisions i asked the nurse in charge of my fathers care for something and was met with "I am passing meds now" or "i am doing a admit now, and that is a priority".I always felt like i was a thorn in the staffs side when asking questions about his care. There are several excellent nurses there, but unfortunatly they do admissions, or are in a administrative role. My father began having diarrhea after a antibidotic course, being in the healthcare profession i was concerned about a possible infection of the gut caused by use of antibiotics. I asked the Nurse to please check into the possibility of this infection and obtain a culture to rule it out, This was never done, I assumed it had been as i did not recieve any further feedback, and i was overwhelmed and stressed re my fathers decline. My father insisted he needed to go home, as he was being left in bed , or in his wheelchair for long periods and was having alot of back pain. When home, the diarrhea continued and i took him to the doctor where it was confirmed he had the infection i was afraid he had. He also had excoriation from diarrhea and a small open area that was not documented or assessed before discharge. By this time, dad had been suffering with the diarrhea for three weeks, My father began a rapid decline exasberated by this infection, and underlying exsisting medical conditons, and sadly passed away the other day. I am not directly blaming the facility for his death, but for contributing to his suffering, and shortening the time he had left. I wrote the director of nursing with my concernes after discharge, and after a week recieved a reply that she would look into it, no responce since, and it has been several months.

Surive a Stroke Foundation

The Rns and aides did not even recognize that my poor Mom was having a stroke. They did nothing but put her back to bed. She didn't survive the stroke although she tried when our family realized they had misdiagnosed her and we sent her to the hospital. The Rns at belmont documented the file and said she had an infection. She lived there for almost 7 years and the Rns didn't care. It was awful as she wanted to suvive and tried when she was at the hospital and nurses were trying to help her. They act like they care and they don't there.
