I toured the Westminster in Austin, and it was quite nice. It's right in the middle of a busy city. I only met mainly with just the one person that gave the tour, and then he introduced us to some people, and they appeared to be quite friendly, but we didn't get any intimate contact with the other staff. They have several different places to eat. It was very good. It's sort of like you're in a castle or something.

I will be moving into Westminster in Austin. I chose it because it's clean, and has very helpful staff, and Leadership. It's CCRC or Lifecare, and it's located in the city. They have lovely residents and it's attractive. They have an enormous number of services offered and activities. They seem interested in the residents and they're genuine. That was a very unusual combination. I didn't find that, and I don't think I found it anywhere else. It's certainly nothing else comparable. The truth of the matter is, I felt like the people that were there and their lifestyle probably will keep the food at a level that I like. A lot of veterinarians, doctors, and lawyers; people that have eaten well, most of their life. I decided that no food will make me happy forever, but the food that would feed that group of people I would probably find acceptable. I'll be moving into the oldest building, which is quite old, but the upgrade is fabulous. The run of the current construction is nice. It is a whole new building, a new dining room, a new bar, and a new everything that's coming. So that will be lovely. Without it, I probably wouldn't have picked it if it would just stay the same way. They have bridge, arts and crafts, and painting. They have nursing services and doctor's medical services. I've gone to an evening performance of Chopin Piano Concerto. I've walked through their park many times and gone to their retail shop and met 10 or 15 people.

My mother-in-law is now at Westminster. It is a fabulous place and she is very happy there. Her room is beautiful. The staff members are outstanding. The food in the independent living side is delicious. It is four-star quality restaurant. The chefs are fabulous. The food in the assisted living is not as good as in the independent living because there are more special diets that they are catering to. My mother-in-law was in the independent living and then she moved to the assisted living, but she loves the food there. She would not miss a meal. My mother-in-law does painting. They paint some artwork of birds and flowers, and they turn them into greeting cards. They're wonderful. We purchased several packs of cards. They have chair exercises, games and activities that they do for memory care. They have a lot to offer.

my mother is very unhappy here. Nearly everyone uses a walker or a cane, the dining room has an old fashioned outdated menu (she loves Thai food and sushi, they won't serve that). The activities are all planned for really feeble people and she is still active. Management patronizes her and then ignores her when ever she asks for something more current, like wifi. But she really likes the staff.

I visited Westminster Manor. What I like about the place is that it's a buy-in and your heirs receive back a percentage of what you have invested in the community. Also, about half of my friends live there so that's good, but everybody thinks it's extremely expensive and I can live there just as cheaply as I can live here in my house. As a matter of fact, I can live cheaper because they pay all the utilities, and provide covered secure parking, housekeeping services, and medical services if you need them. They have an Alzheimer's facility, skilled nursing as well as assisted living and regular apartments. They offer a continuum of care and are one of only three in Texas. There are seven different apartments, ranging from studio apartments up to 3-4-bedrooms. Everytime somebody moves out, they renovate. There are two brand-new buildings, and it is definitely an upscale place. They have a chef and dining areas, one is bistro-style and the other is cafeteria-style, but there are tablecloths with cloth underneath, China, crystal, the whole bit. It's better than most hotels I have been in. There's an an activities director there and there's so much to do that many of my friends who have moved there have droppedinto the lecture and similar programs at the University of Texas which are also exceptional. The people there are not ones you're going to meet on the streets, like college presidents, lawyers, doctors, school teachers, and diplomats. The staff is extremely well trained, courteous, and personable that you can hardly get anything any better, and certainly a cut above any hotel I have been in or hospital.
