Our second choice would have been Evergreen Senior Living. They have independent, assisted, and memory care, so they have three options. At that point, we weren't sure what level of care my father-in-law was going to need. The part that I didn't like for us, was the distance from our house. It's still right in Eugene, but the location wasn't optimal for us. The staff was patient and knowledgeable. She took her time to show me all the living areas. They had activities, but they just had more space. For us, we were looking at what activities we thought my father-in-law might do, which would be the movie theater, and there, they were like couches, so it wasn't set up to look like a theater. I know that's nit-picky, but that was one of the things that we liked about the other place. They had a gym, a salon, and a lot of crafting activities, which was not something for my father-in-law. They offered a lot of activities. The nice thing about Evergreen's activities is they list everything on their website, so family members can log in at any time to view it, which I thought was nice.

We really liked Evergreen Senior Living. It was a really nice campus. It was not close to a main road or anything. They had a car garage and a little patio. It was like a little apartment with a nice kitchen, a living room, and bedrooms. They were nice and roomy. They were like duplexes. The staff was really nice. The menu looked good.

I went to Evergreen Senior Living. It was really good, and the people were really knowledgeable and very helpful. It was well kept and very clean, and it looked like the other people were having fun. They were playing bingo or something in the community part of it.

Provider Response

Dear Karen, thank you for taking the time to rate and review our community. Your feedback is appreciated.

I visited this facility

I toured the independent living at Evergreen Senior Living because everything else was closed up. I talked to a woman there. They had independent living cottages, which appealed to me. The grounds of the place will be fixed up. They will produce meals, and the meals will be brought to me. The place was excellent. The only bad part about it was they were just half a block away from a heavily traveled street called Barger, but other than that, it was excellent. The cottage was very nice.

Provider Response

Hi Albert, thank you for your kind words and feedback from your tour. Our Independent Living Cottages are very spacious and we do provide 3 daily, delicious restaurant style meals including our campus amenities. Thank you for taking the time to rate and review our community. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out us.

I visited Brookdale Eugene Alpine Springs and we're ready to move forward with this, but I'm a little disappointed in their response back to me. I gave the lady a copy of the latest evaluation that my mother had. She wrote me an email and she felt the cost would be inflated quite a bit, but she'd rather be high than be low, which I respect, but it's substantially more than where Mom currently is. The facility was fine. It's not brand new, but it's clean, and it seemed homey. They have an exercise area, a BeFiT program, Flex Your Brain, arts and crafts, bingo, and reading reviews.

I liked Brookdale fine. It was very clean, very bright, and cheery. The problem was that the person whom I had an appointment with was not there that day, which turned me off a little. Nobody bothered to let me know; they should have called and said that she was not available. However, other than that, it was very nice. The person that showed us around was not somebody who normally showed you around and rushed us through, so we really did not get a chance to make an assessment of anything.

The people in Brookdale werevery helpful and they showed me around, but unfortunately they did not have Medicaid, and I am not able to afford it, so I had to cut my visit short. The rooms were clean and bright. I was very impressed. The place was definitely one to consider. There's a salon where my mother could get her hair done, exercise in the morning, and different classes and programs. I walked through the dining area, and it was very nice, well lit, clean, and looked good.

We had some things we liked and several things we didn’t like about Alpine Springs. We didn’t think that Mom got the care she deserved and thought the help was just basically lazy. The staff was very friendly and cleanliness seemed adequate, but I didn’t think they kept the personal rooms clean.

We saw Brookdale. We decided against it because it was very expensive and it didn’t smell very good. The director who met us struck us as a very strange person to be working with old people. She didn’t seem to know any of the residents’ names. She didn’t seem to recognize any of them. She just looked like a salesperson. I don’t feel like she would be a good person to reach my mom and dad. The place was expensive and it smelled like pee, so we didn’t go with it.

Provider Response

We apologize that your tour of Brookdale Eugene Alpine Springs did not meet your expectations. Please be assured our staff is continuously committed to providing the highest-quality service and care for each resident and we will share your feedback with our management team.

My mother is in Brookdale, and everything is doing good. The staff, the rooms, everything is great. Her room is spacious and exactly what she needs. She is in the memory care facility and they do the best they can. They keep them engage. It is a very comfortable, caring, giving and quiet place.

I am a friend or relative of resident

I am a family member of resident. I visit at least 3-4 weekly and eat at least once a week. This facility has gone downhill for the past year and even more so in the past 5 months. The food has gone from bad to awful. Sometimes they will serve 2-3 carbs in one meal with no protein. Rice is a staple here. What little meat they serve is most often dried out, vegetables are either so hard you are unable to chew them or so overcooked they taste like mush. It can take up to an hour to wait for your meal to be served. Emergency pull cords are not used for emergencies. They tell residents to pull cord if they need anything, garbage taken out, window opened, bed maid etc. Many of the housekeeping items should be done on a daily basis but are not. Staff is overworked and is very hard to keep good staff that knows much about assisting our elderly. Front desk person is very unprofessional! I would love to move family to another facility but is used to it and doesn't want the stress of moving. Sadly I could go on and on. They do have a few caring and good workers but I would never recommend this place! They can and should do a better job. Our elderly deserve better than this.

Most of the staff is fine at Brookdale Eugene Alpine Springs. My relative has a one-bedroom, and it is nice. The dining room setup was OK. They have movie nights and card games. One thing they can improve on is their food.

It is nice and fairly new. It seems well kept and well run. They are older and used. I've heard a lot of good things about Alpine Springs. They are all kind of crowding the same price range. It was a quick walkthrough, and she showed me the rooms that they have. It seems nice and well kept.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I and my wife lived here in Emeritus at Alpine for six months. We went in the assisted living side. It was for my wife, and I was just staying with her. The rooms were beautiful. We had a one-bedroom apartment. It was a beautiful apartment. There is nothing bad to say about it at all. I have no problems, and I am very active, but the environment is setup more for people who are very disabled both mentally and physically. I just wasn't comfortable. When my wife's condition improved somewhat, we decided to move back on our own. Also, the pricing is just too expensive for us. They got problems with the staff. I guess they were understaffed. We were supposed to get certain housekeeping services done on a regular basis. One week we might get the beds made another week we wouldn't. It was a hit and miss thing. The food was OK, but the service was lousy. I think they need much better and a much tighter supervision of their staff.

We were in Emeritus at Alpine Springs, and I thought they had beautiful facilities for people who are mobile. They have their own private little duplexes plus the fact that they have assisted living within the main building itself. Also, they are contracted with Medicaid so that should something happen and the person who paying should run out of funds, then Medicaid would immediately step in, and they would not be forced to move. They just have a beautiful lobby and great, caring people. They allowed pets there and very home like. It was one of the places that my client was looking up before she decided on the other facility. They have a full memory care unit just across the parkway from the assisted living they have, and that is a whole unit memory; it’s very clean and very well run. They have assisted living there once they get out of rehab, and that’s all within the campus. I was extremely impressed with that.

Mom has a studio apartment at Emeritus. They have scheduled activities. They have a bus, and they take them shopping and wherever else. The staff seemed to be taking good care of my mom. When we first got there, there was a little bit of problem with getting her medication regulated and getting it to her on time. But we got that taken care of.

The staff at Emeritus At Alpine Springs was very nice. They showed me all around and answered all my questions. It was a beautiful community; however, the price range was pretty high for me. They showed me a very large room that they had just finished redoing. It was breathtakingly beautiful. There were windows all the way around, and it was really nice, but it was also very expensive. Also, it looked like they had a really nice dining area. What I liked best about Emeritus At Alpine Springs was that everything was nice, clean, and beautiful. People were nice, too. I also like the idea that you can go in as independent and then if you need more help, you don't have to move to another place, you could move into their assisted living. Of course the cost would go up, depending on how much assistance you need. I would rate it a 5. It doesn't necessarily seem that it would completely suit my needs, but as far as everything I saw, it was just wonderful.

We also looked at Alpine Village (Emeritus at Alpine Campus) and it’s a clean facility. The staff seemed to be really courteous, friendly, and helpful. They seem to have plenty of things to do although we did get much into the details of that.

I visited this facility

I wasn't very pleased with Emeritus. The first time I went to check it out, I called because I got stuck in the doctor's office and they said: "We don't even have you in the schedule". When I got an appointment to go back, there was no one in the front desk when I walked in. I sat there waiting as people come and go. I heard laughter and people chatting from behind the door of the front desk area. I just had a bad experience with the personnel who not seemed to care and I thought they were not particularly interested if they let someone sit there. I could have been anybody sitting there and even for the gal to say: "Gee, are you waiting for someone?" But just the fact that they didn't even acknowledge, she looked right at me when she was talking on phone and then she hanged up and turned her back at me. It was very rude. I almost didn't even wait for the one who came and gave me the tour because I was already in a negative frame of mind just for that. When the manager showed me through, I really wasn't impressed with it. I was sure a lot of it got to do with the fact that though it was an assisted living, anyone could walk out of that place. In their dining room, the tables were very close together. There's no room to maneuver the walkers. She showed me the room and it was a nice little room with a bed, but in assisted living, there was no kitchenette or anything like that. It had just mainly a bathroom with enough room for your bed and a dressed and a chair. However, they were very nice and had really nice safety bathroom. They had the higher toilets instead of the really low ones and grab bars everywhere. They had an inch step in or slanted down by the shower. Next to the toilet, they had a pull cord if you needed it. They had a big bulletin board with a large print of the whole month's activities. My first impression of Emeritus was cold and distant. There were no flowers, no color. I was really disappointed and I know it used to something else before Emeritus took over. May be they were just getting their act together.
