Employer: Home Instead Senior Care

Location: Gorham, Maine

Inspiration for this Nomination:

Lori illustrates the commitment to serve her clients as well as a commitment to supporting her agency, her peers and the community. Despite her own health issues and being the mother of a child with challenges, Lori is caring, empathetic and responsible in all her interactions---be it with clients, families, office staff and/or the community at large.

Her clients trust her judgment and abilities. They love her sense of humor and unflappable attitude. She has worked with some of our most challenging clients and has been successful where others have retreated.

Caregiver's Best Skills and Attributes:

Lori has several areas of expertise that highlight her excellent ability to work in the eldercare field.

First: Many of her clients have been facing the daunting task of downsizing their lives. Lori understands the emotional and physical challenges of this process. She is efficient in organizing their belongings while taking the time to let the senior express their memories and feelings attached to their items.

Second: Lori"˜s quiet, calm demeanor helps in her work with clients with dementia or other cognitive disorders. She is flexible and goes with the client wherever she/he may be at that moment. She is exceptionally creative in her approaches with these clients.

Third: Lori is committed to giving back to her community in honor of her clients. For two years in a row she was instrumental in organizing and implementing our fundraiser, the Alz Fair, to benefit the "Walk to End Alzheimer's". She gathered her CAREGiver peers and local vendors to make this event a huge success. Both years the event raised $2,000 and made the community more aware of the need to fund Alzheimer's research.

Feedback About This Caregiver:

Client's who receive services from Lori repeatedly call the office in praise of her work. Family members ask for her specifically if their loved one is returning to service and had Lori previously. She has made difficult choices (what goes and what stays) easier for sons and daughters so that they can remain emotional supportive to their parents---not the one who "made" them give up their personal "treasures".

More About This Caregiver:

From Lori I have learned the benefit of letting clients take things slowly, listening to them and respecting the life stories. Also I have learned that no matter how busy my life becomes, there is room to commit to a cause dear to my heart.

Lori attends all the professional trainings offered by Home Instead Senior Care as well as Quarterly Informational meetings. She leads her peers by example with total commitment to "the cause" yet with great humility.

Not everyone can be a caregiver. It takes patience, understanding, a sense of humor, and common sense. Lori has all of these , plus the innate ability to know what her clients needs are even when they aren't able to express those needs. She is a lovely lady with a big heart and gentle nature.

Lori and I overlapped at work; she'd be leaving and I'd be starting my shift with the same client. She always took the time to share useful information with me for the comfort and well-being of the client. It made my job that much easier. Thank you, Lori!!
