Caregiver: Pearl H.

A Caring Champion 2013 Nominee
Pearl Harper
All Rights Reserved

Employer: Acappella in Home Care

Location: Dallas, Texas

Inspiration for this Nomination:

Pearl is a senior herself. She fell into hard time, unable to find work, so decided to volunteer at a Food Pantry in Dallas, called Brother Bills Helping Hands. She eagerly volunteered, helping others in need, and always counted the blessings that she had, despite her struggles. Her husband is disabled and is unable to work. I met Pearl visiting my church one Sunday with the Brother Bills director. In getting to know her, I found out that she was without work, but had had previous experience as a secretary for a Nursing Home that recently closed down. Her spirit and attitude were nothing more than that of an angel. I asked her to work for me, and her work ethic, servant's heart, and caring spirit are second to no one. Her purpose in life's work is to make a difference, and boy does she!

Caregiver's Best Skills and Attributes:

Pearl defines that definition of caring. She always has a smile on her face, and is always eager to learn. There is no challenge that she won't take on. She is a teacher, always teaching some type of life lesson--She exudes compassion, and her cup runneth over with kindness, caring, and finding the place emotionally that her client is at. Example, we have a widowed male client who had lost all will to live after his wife passed last year. The family was at a loss on what to do. Within two months, Pearl was taking this client to Brother Bills to volunteer and help the poor by serving meals, stocking shelves, and feel needed. This client was also a fabulous dancer in his day. Pearl encouraged him to take dancing lessons and within two months, he was no longer using his wheelchair! Their friendship has been such a blessing to the client, and his family. Because of Pearl's help, they feel that they have their father back.

Feedback About This Caregiver:

The family says that Pearl has given their father his life back. Their father looks forward to seeing Pearl on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They can't believe what a difference she has made. Pearl has a servant's heart and feels that this is a higher calling. They couldn't be more pleased of the care that Pearl has provided.

More About This Caregiver:

Pearl is a teacher every time she provides care, and her goal is to always put her best foot forward. She goes on her shift with a goal and a prayer to make a difference in the life of her client, if for just one day. Pearl has a devout faith, and states that she prays before she walks into the home, specifically to make a difference in his day! She sees her job not as a job, but as a ministry! No matter what situation we send her to, she always puts herself in the client's shoes, and finds a way to connect with that client make him feel he is her top priority.

I could go on and on. She is the example we should all follow! and I share her story with new caregivers on the importance of always being a "PEARL"! When I share her story at our orientation, there is not a dry eye in the room. Now THATS how to make a difference!
