Dad lost Mother to death and spent his 88th year seperated from his wife of 63 years, removed (to my home) from all his familiar surroundings, posesstions, extended family, regular routines, church friends, doctors,neighbors, and everything else that gave meaning and purpose to life. In failing health and with progressive Alzheimers, he struggled with day to day existence. As primary caregiver, it fell to me to tend to his safety and well-being. Complicating my need to tend to Dad's physical and emotional welfare, was my wife's elongated cronic and debilitating pain as well as continuing expectations of my vocation. Eternal Hope Hospice stepped into our lives and my near emotional desperation to provide help and guidance. For four months, their staff visited, bathed, administered medications, tracked his physical circumstance, communicated with the primary physician. Simultaneously EHH gave attention to the emotional and physical strains on our family. When they arrived I no longer felt (and was, in fact, no longer) alone in efforts to help Dad through the final days of his life. I will be forever grateful to the kind and professional help my family received during those trying and stressful months. Their good efforts allowed us to celebrate the arrival of his 89th birthday with smiles and ice cream a week before his systems shut down and he died peacefully.
