My sister was passing away in UH Neuro Intensive Care last week. I had a consult with Maryann. I believed that my sister was uninsured. Maryann called her supervisor about that and when her supervisor called back they proceeded to have a lengthy personal discussion in front of me in the room with my dying sister - completely unprofessional. The whole tone of the discussion changed and Maryann actually commented that if my sister lingered she may be sent to a nursing home and I would have to pay the bill for that. Most horrendous experience of my life on top of the trauma of watching my sister die. I thought Hospice was compassionate and based on the ability to pay. Maryann increased my stress level by 1000% and made me angry on top of the most stressful experience of my life. When she left I apologized to my sister for having that conversation in front of her although she was unconscious I believe she heard it. She passed away the next day. I have an entirely new outlook on Hospice.

I have use other Hospice companies before, but will never recommend this company to anyone. Other companies were right on track getting a patient comfortable and it took them over a week 1/2 +. Follow-up was not consistent, nor communication. My mother was miserable up until her last 3 days. Read reviews before you select a company, they are posted for good reasons by others. Never again!! They couldn't get my mother comfortable

I have had Hospice of the Western Reserve twice in my life. Once for my Mom...and once for my husband. To say the least, I certainly hope I never have to have them again. The first time I had them..my mother was dying,.. i a facility. The hospice nurse never came due to the fact that she had a flat tire on the way and never had back up come. My mother died a very terrible death that was not peaceful because the nursing facility could not provide the medication it had to be provided by them. I recently had them for my husband who was dying of cancer. They dropped the ball again. All they do is sit on their computers for hours. I do not see where the support was at all. When you call, you have to wait an hour for someone to call you back. When they do come, I felt they were not helpful at all.. After my husband passed, it was 3 days before they picked up the hospital bed he died in. Even though I called numerous times... They left it there for me to look at everyday. I could go on and on but I won't... This organization has totally went downhill. I would NEVER get them again for any of my loved ones.. They are a joke..

When a family member is dying, we shouldn't have to be the ones contacting Hospice to do things like provide incontinence products, or other hygienic items, like sponge toothbrushes and lotion. Or actually having to ask to have her temperature taken or needing to remind one of their own staff that she shouldn't be drinking from a straw- per their OWN instruction. Someone should just take care of this. It was appalling that I had to worry about basic physical care instead of just being there emotionally for my mother. I was very disappointed that unless I was directing the comfort and care, NOTHING was done. Hospice was invisible during the last week of my mother's life. My mother died without receiving pain medication because it was locked away and there was nobody on call to administer it until the morning. As a former volunteer for hospice, I used to have very positive impressions of such care. This experience ruined those impressions for me. I would think long and hard before utilizing this particular service.

    I am/was a resident of this facility

I am in Ames Family Hospice House, and they've been very caring and very helpful. They set up everything for me, and I've only been here for a little over a week now. They're giving me home services, like medically related services, also social workers, spiritual advisors, and everything else that I need. It's been fine overall.

I hired Hospice of the Western Reserve for mom. It's great. They have an aide come out twice a week and a nurse come out once a week. They have a social worker and a chaplain, too. They do everything. We have been using them for about a month now. They're the one that is closest to us. The caregivers are awesome, very caring and very helpful. Whatever you need or if you ask them a question, they would just go above and beyond.

My friend didn't have in-home care, but they went to Western Reserve Hospice. They took care of her until she passed away. It was a nice place. I would recommend it to anyone. They were very kind. I wasn't there long enough to see their nurse come in and do anything, but she talked to us in the hall. She was very kind. The rooms were nice and clean. The hallways were large. The rooms were large, too. Everything was spic and span and the people were very kind and courteous.

We used this service because it was recommended by the hospital our loved one was in. If we had it to do over agin we would run as fast as we can away from such a uncaring group of neglectful people! First they closed the facility closest to us (Medina) without telling us, 2weeks after we signed with them. Then when we had to send our loved one to them for comfort care. The only place they had a bed for him was out on East 185 st. (45 minutes away). Now lets talk about the very rude and highly unskilled nursing staff.... they NEVR just went in and checked on him, we would sit there for HOURS without one nurse come in the room! When we had questions we had to look for our nurse. Our loved one was dying of a brain tumor and the nursing staff would man handle him ,never showed any compassion for a dying human being! When we did ask a question the nurse had to go look up the answer, she never knew what we were talking about. As your loved one is lying there don’t expect the staff to control their own noise level... these people will stand right outside your door and laugh and talk like they’re at a party. We had a moment when we ask the nurse why our loved ones eye was open, she said she didn’t know as she poked him in the eye while closing the lid! We know it hurt him as his arms started to try to block it and it sent him into a panic.. on the morning he passed when we got the phone call, my wife said hello 3 times before the nurse who was laughing on the other end finally unsympathetically said I’m calling to tell you your father “ is dead”!!! My wife just hung up on her!!! What a horrible way to tell someone such devastating news!! What a horrible place to have a loved one spend their last days alive. Please I beg you, avoid this facility at all cost!!! Thank you and God bless you and your loved ones!

I would recommend the services of Hospice of Western Reserve for excellent care of your family member. The Nurse/Sarah-Social Worker/Shayla and Spiritual/Doreca and Lorraine, N.P, were excellent, caring, professional, prompt and genuine. Immediate with medical equipment, medicine, supplies, everything a patient would need was provide. The resident care, West Wing staff were great, they seemed to have taken exceptional care of Mother. GOD bless you all

While the initial contact person was expeditious and seemed thorough, no costs for services were presented to me. Then, what I believed to be a 45 minute consult meeting, took place at my home with three other individuals and, unbeknownst to me, billing had already begun for services rendered. Once I was informed of the outrageous price tag for their hospice care ($4400.00/month including a 20% discount), I informed the trio that their services would not be needed. I just received a bill for $360.00!! Yet, my since passed wife never received care from them. These people are chiselers and should be avoided. There are many better options available.

Western Reserve sells you on how well they take care and care for your family member. Not true! They schedule to have aide come in and get my 99 year old MIL at 6:00 and they give her a bath right away after getting her out bed. They had to do this. To fit her in their schedule. So we then went to another Hospice so Western Reserve was to come in put puck up their bed. They gave us a time frame from 1-3. Never showed. The new company had their bed there and ready to replace. New hospice called to find out what the problem and they then said we dont know when it would picked up. We stayed till 5. They never showed We were able to get new bed in. For their care of resident they can care less when they are not in charge. Stay Away

My brother was in the care of the Hospice of Western Reserve and was treated extremely well. Staff made their appointed dates consistently and came when needed in reasonable time. All of the carers were kind and very helpful to my nephew and his wife, providing information and support as appropriate. We were all impressed and grateful for their services. Thank you.

My father was a Medina WRH patient in his home for a little over a month this winter. When we signed up for hospice care we were expecting to care for him ourselves with additional support from hospice when it was needed. Unfortunately the support was sporadic and rarely happened if it was needed after hours or weekends. No one answers phone calls no matter the time or day of the week so you must leave a message and wait for a call back from a "customer service" person who takes the information then passes it to the appropriate person. Sometimes they get back to you, but more often you must call again before you get a response. The nurses were nice and knowledgeable, but they didn't always show up when they were scheduled to be there. I understand that things may come up to delay your appointment, but we never received a phone call to tell us they would be late or not coming at all. The aides were also nice, but seemed to spend more time chatting with the family caregivers rather than actually helping with patient care. I probably would have let the issues I mentioned above slide until the night my dad passed away. It took three phone calls to hospice before there was a response from them and someone finally showed up to help my mother and sister who were with my dad. Then to add insult to injury, probably because it was a weekend, the empty hospital bed which took up half the living room remained until Monday afternoon. This also took 2 or 3 phone calls. What a brutal reminder that our loved one was gone. I have dealt with other hospices before and had wonderful experiences which is what I expected to receive from WRH. My family and I were very disappointed and would not recommend them.

I chose WRH as my mother’s hospice provider. The lead nurse on my mothers case was good. However, in the end the service that I thought I would get and what I got for my moms last days was terrible, non compassionate and incompetent. Crossroads Hospice came to my rescue and provided excellent compassionate around the clock care. I would of not known what I would of done without them. Western Reserve told me the stand by me care in the end was never quaranteed and it would be intermittent. So I could never count on someone be able to sit bye my mom at night, and if they came it wouldn’t be the whole night. The one night I had stand bye me care the aide was 1/2 hr late and then was caught sleeping at my moms bedside by the memory care facility staff. Very disappointed.....

    dont sign up with them

One of the worst hospices around. I am a nurse who works in long term care and have had several patients under Hospice of the Western Reserve s care. Universally, they are either non receptive, non responsive to patients needs and completely not proactive when it comes to end of life care. Some of the things the nurses have said and done with regard to their patients is so unbelievable you can't believe these are licensed nurses. Every patient i have ever had with hospice of the western reserve has died alone. I have called to ask for a staff member to come for a patient and been told that they dont do that, it's the family 's role. If the person has no family, they tell me to use my own staff (which we do to the extent possible in these type of situations). I have called and never gotten called back, asked for things for patients and never gotten them. I would say if you want your family members to be treated poorly, for tge end of life to be miserable and to have nurses and directors who care only about money, use hospice of tge western reserve. I have yet to meet a single nurse that works in long term care that likes, respects or would recommend this organization.

Wow, this place is unbelievable, they were not very interactive with my dad.. at all, the social worker was awesome, the nursing care was horrible. The evening receptionists attititude was terrible, her personality was very bad. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Nobody who is already grieving wants to deal with this kind of attitude or behavior. Caring for a sick person is already stressful, nobody needs the added stress. I thought hospice care was supposed to be helpful to the family, Helping to lift the burden.

My mother-in-law is with the Western Reserve Hospice. They take very good care of her. Whatever she needs, they’re there to take care of it. As far as I know, the family doesn't have any problems with them.

Some nurses are really nice. But the receptionist and after services hours ( which starts at 4:30 pm) are HORRIBLE . Receptionist always unhappy. After the hours service receptionist hang up on me. Team members do not give you direct line where you can leave a message. Therefore, you have to call receptionist first then she will leave a message to the team and the team will call you back ( Number will be blocked). Therefore, it could take all day. Receptionist and after hours service team are not professionals it makes experience really bad.

My late fiance was a HWR patient for nine months. Had it not been for the excellent care that was provided to him at both our home in Ashtabula and Hospice House on East 185th street, we wouldn't have had that time. He almost died in our local hospital after 3 months so we had him transferred to their Cleveland inpatient unit. Because of their expertise, he made a complete turnaround in 24 hours and was able to come home again. They gave us an extra 6 months of quality! Thank you Dr Dann!! Bob told me that you were the first doctor that didn't make him feel guilty for saying he was still in pain. What a shame the MD's in the general public do this. When he was no longer safe to be alone, we were able to obtain a residential bed there and he lived there for 3 months until it was time to come home to die. His sister and I would gather up the family and spend the night with him and no one ever complained about us having 2 adults, 3 teenagers, a toddler and a 6 month old baby staying in him room. All of the staff was caring and compasionate. Yes, some of them had bad days but given what they deal with on a day to day basis, that is to be expected. After all, hospice employees are people too with feelings and emotions. I would never have survived our journey with the support of Hospice of the Western Reserve.
