Country Meadows York West Retirement Community is a comprehensive organization dedicated to enriching all aspects of its residents' lives. Its quaint location within the Shiloh neighborhood of York, Pennsylvania, is close to Weigelstown, Dover, Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Baltimore. Recently renovated, this Country Meadows community is like a little oasis within the neighborhood. The remodel involved joining the three existing buildings into one for more interaction among residents. Seniors live on one floor and can easily make their way through spacious hallways and rooms out to walk through the neighborhood, or sit and watch a family of ducks waddle by.
Fitness, service, and activities are key focus points at this community. Programs like the Fitness Fun Sampler, a four-part package to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance demonstrate the staff's commitment to maintaining good health. Dining staff are professional wait people, not caregivers, striving to provide outstanding service. Servers remember personal preferences, like extra butter for Mr. Jones and no ice for Mrs. Green. The ample activity program ranges from Street Rod Conventions to home baking in one of the community's two country kitchens. Frequent trips to town allow residents to attend train shows, arts and crafts festivals, antique markets, and the Annual York Fair. Residents also get to visit the York Fairgrounds for over 100 events per year. The York West home even formed its own chorus, the "Melodians," a group that sings both onsite and in the community.
Country Meadows Retirement Communities is a multi-generational family business, founded by former Pennsylvania Governor George M. Leader and wife Mary Jane. For over four decades, the organization has remained family-owned, with the founders still sitting on the board. Adult children Michael Leader (CEO), David Leader (COO), and brother-in-law, Ted Janeczek (CFO), now run the establishment. There are a total of 10 communities owned by Country Meadows -- nine in Pennsylvania, and one in Frederick, Maryland.
The organization's family mission is to keep residents self-sufficient and independent as long as possible. How independent is independent? The answer differs for each resident. As we age, we lose ability to perform certain tasks -- but there are other tasks we can still do. Country Meadows assesses each individual to find out what he can do and where he needs help. Country Meadows meets residents where they're at. For example, a man who can no longer drive might be able to help with directions; a woman who can't use a knife to chop carrots safely might be able to fold napkins or tear lettuce.
Country Meadows staff also customizes exercise programs to each individual's ability. Classes are instructed according to levels of proficiency for optimum physical, mental, and spiritual benefits.
Country Meadows strives to help residents find meaning in their lives. The staff knows that giving back to the community can be extremely gratifying to seniors, even as they themselves are receiving assistance. For example, a resident might need assistance getting dressed because it hurts to lift her arms -- but that very same resident might be able to participate in an arthritis advocacy walk. She is giving back and making a difference, and her contribution matters. Country Meadows has partnered with numerous charitable organizations to make opportunities like this possible, because they know that senior lives are made richer when they can help others.
One secret of Country Meadows' Success: they recruit and retain the best staff in the area. They've been deemed "Best Place to Work in Pennsylvania" eight times between 2001-2011. This is no accident: Country Meadows management strives to create a culture of fulfillment and passion by providing ongoing training, education, and career enhancement opportunities. Employees are happy to be here, and families notice that they are gracious, approachable, and helpful.

The home was very welcoming and helpful. The relative I visited was placed with a roommate originally, due to the onset of dementia. The staff was always friendly, even when there was trouble with the insurance payment and money was owed. They never threatened to kick her out or treated her with any less respect. As her dementia worsened, they moved her to a more secure room as she would wander off on her own and get lost and confused. They kept a close eye on her. When she developed pneumonia and her situation worsened, they then brought in Hospice. She was treated with dignity and respect, which is what anyone deserves in that stage of life. We know our family member could be extremely difficult and belligerent at times, but they handled the situation with the utmost care. They also called regularly with updates or any pertinent information regarding her situation, so we always felt kept in the loop.

Our great grandmother lives in an assisted living facility and is quite pleased with it. She never calls and has complaints and seems to be quite satisfied with her personal care takers. They have community games and grandma has quite a few friends that she has made there. I know she would not want to trade and thinks the people there are genuine and really there to help her.

My mother is a Country Meadows of York on Trolley Rd resident. She enjoys the amenities and opportunity to participate in organized events at the site. She also seems to enjoy the dining and socialness of the facility. My mother enjoys the staff and other residents and has formed many relationships while there. She has also been allowed to have a library cart to collect and disperse books to the residents. We feel very comfortable with our mother being there.

My grandfather actually lived in this retirement community for the final years of his life. What really surprised me was that he said that they were some of the best. I think that this was mainly because of the staff at Country Meadows. I have only spoken to a few in passing while visiting my grandfather, but from what I could gather they were a very nice bunch. They were always so nice and sincere. One thing that grandfather really enjoyed was that the staff there didn't really treat him as if he were living in a stereotypical retirement community. They always made sure that he had his independence, and they were just there if he ever needed help. I would highly recommend this retirement facility to anyone who is interested. I myself am even thinking about going when i am in my golden years. It is very important to make sure that your loved ones are happy and taken care of.
