Oak Grove Manor is a board and care facility on Oak Grove Road in an upscale residential neighborhood of Walnut Creek, about 20-30 minutes outside of San Francisco. It’s safe, secure, spotless—but also homey in décor. And the grounds are beautiful. I’m a geriatric care manager who has placed a number of clients there, and it’s very nice.

The rooms are nice, too. All private, though I seem to remember that there’s the capacity for one shared room. Some have sliding doors to the back or front patio.

The staff, and the owner/admin are all good. The staff has been quite stable over the years, and they’re all certified nurse assistants and knowledgeable. The admin/owner is very hands on and does a good job of training the CNAs. One of the nice things here is if a resident needs to go to the emergency room, the owner or one of the staff goes with them. And they’re all very communicative with families and with us. They know the residents inside out and handle dementia patients well at all stages.

The food there is excellent, too. Fabulous—prepared fresh on site.

The one downside is, like most board and care facilities, there aren’t a lot of activities—just the one a week, I think, which is required by law. And it’s probably not as good for someone with no cognitive impairment, since so many of the residents have dementia.
