I liked everything about Sumter Senior Living except for the price. It was run very well. We liked it very much. They had a couple of apartments. They're not that good about following up, though. They call and then I don't hear from them again, but Heather, the one I met there, was very attentive and very knowledgeable. The rooms were very nice. They showed us one that was being worked on, and repainted, and the carpet was being pulled up, and it's very clean. The atmosphere was friendly and attentive. They have lots of things for the seniors to do, which was a big prerequisite with us because we're still active, I run a bridge club here in my place and they thought I could open up a bridge club there, too. We had lunch there and the food was excellent. They had a lovely big dining room and served like a restaurant with tablecloths. It was very, very beautiful. They have a beauty salon, a gym where you can work out, water aerobics, and all the things I was looking for.

Sumter Senior Living was very good. It was an excellent experience. It was my second on the list. It was nice. It wasn't as nice as the other place, but it rates right up there to it. The staff was very nice and very professional, and they acknowledged the people who were living there, too. The facility was very clean. The rooms were very nice. The layout was nice. The rooms were very nice. The hallways were very wide. They had a very good pool. The amenities were nice. They're affiliated with The Villages. You can use your village card and do the amenities in The Villages.

My brother will be moving into Sumter Senior Living. When we toured, the staff was knowledgeable, courteous, and patient. The building itself is in very good shape and maintained. It's a more open feeling than some of the other ones we toured because it's a little bit larger. The independent living facility is next door, which is one of the main reasons for moving in. He will be moving into the assisted living facility, but he does have access to the next door if he wants to go over there for a different dinner or whatever. His room is a studio. It's nice, clean, and it's small, but they all are. The staff is fine. They have multiple areas, a library, and common spaces outside. They have a movie room, bingo room, and multipurpose rooms.

We got contacted by a woman at Sumter Senior Living, and we ended up heading over there because of my father-in-law's request, he is now working with them to possibly move in as early as next week. We toured both independent living and the memory care unit. The experience was very positive. The people were friendly. They gave us the information that we needed, gave us the tour, and answered all the questions we had on the tour. The rooms were very clean and well-maintained. The facility was very easy to navigate and had a lot of resources for both my in-laws, so that made it easy as well. The staff on the tour was extremely friendly and welcoming to my in-laws for the care that they need as well as the nurse. We talked to the nurse in the memory care facility for a little while and she was very helpful.

I loved Sumter Senior Living. The set up was very casual and very friendly. I thought my parents would love it there. It was a very nice place. The person who gave me the tour was very informative. She was very clear in the different packages that were there and the information that was given to me. The follow up was wonderful. They give you some kind of courtesy moving situation where they come and move your furniture into the place. The eating area was just not as big as the other facility we went to, but it was comfortable, intimate, and looked clean. The apartments were a good size. The shower looked safe, but the area was a little small with the one bedroom, and that would have taken a little bit of adjusting for my parents. I also could see a big disparity when I walked from the independent living to their assisted living.

Sumter Senior Living has a very nice pool, a nice dining area, a nice informal dining area, and a lot of physical activity facilities. It is located in a nice area at the top of a hill, but it is 10 to 15 minutes away from a hospital. I saw a one-bedroom. The size is adequate. My particular desire is something where I could have visitors stay in another room, but it's not available at the moment. There is a waiting list, too. I saw the menu and they showed us the area where you can eat. They provide three meals a day. The dining area was very attractive and very comfortable. They also have a parking facility for your own car.

I will be moving into Sumter Senior Living. I like the facility, plus the fact that it's close to where I live. I know the area, and it's near my friends. I've seen it a number of times now. They worked very well with me and accomplished what I wanted to do. I ate there a couple of times. I liked the fact that they have the open menu. One thing I like there is if I have a doctor's appointment, I don't have to go by their car or by their scheduled tours. They'll send a special car over for me. They have a salon, a gym, and a pool.

Sumter Senior Living was very nice, and the facility staff was very good. They look like they had a lot of activities. They had several different floor plans, and they were adequate. There's a common library, a dining room, and TV room. They do offer transportation. It was just very clean and organized.

I liked my visit to Sumter Senior Living. The location is great and the 1-bedroom apartment was fine and would have accommodated what we needed. They had lots of activities, they had a board showing all the activities and they had plenty. I like the fact that there were 2-hour room checks 24 hours a day. We looked at one room, it was being painted for a new resident and it was sufficient with a refrigerator and a microwave. The staff who gave the tour was very good, she had lots of information and answered all the questions. They seem to have plenty of facilities like onsite rehab, and the dining area was very nice.

I liked Sumter Senior Living's floor plans but I didn't like the rooms as much as I liked the ones in the other community I visited. I liked that they have broken up the areas so that people from each area didn't have to walk that far to get to the dining room. It was the independent living that I looked at. They have a lot of activities and they also have a pool. The physical condition of the community was very good and the upkeep was very nice.

Sumter Senior Living was very nice and very well kept, and the people there were very nice. I like the fact that it's a month-to-month lease since I'm not sure if my brother's going to like it there. So I'm not going to be tied into a long-term situation where he won't be able to leave when he wants to leave. The staff is very nice, everything about the place is very nice, very new, and very well-kept. It's laid out kind of like a hotel, like a very nice resort. The whole place was very well-maintained, people were nice, and the facility was nice.

We live in Sumter Senior Living. It's very good. The staff are very nice. They offer three meals a day and all kinds of activities. They have games, exercises and all kinds of things to keep us occupied. We have an activities room, a salon, and a swimming pool. We have a two-bedroom-two-bath apartment. They have all sizes of rooms available from studio up to this. The cost is very high comparatively. It's managed by Grace Management, but we don't know who they are and they do not associate with us.

Sumter Senior Living was a very busy place. It's very big but there's no campus, which was one of the things we're interested in seeing in a facility. The staff was very professional. The facility was kept in excellent shape. I could see the support staff working there and they were cleaning and doing it. They were very attentive to the place and it looked that way. It was a good tour.

Come and see our beautiful surroundings and spacious apartments. Do you like buffets? You will enjoy them here. Buffets are "Grand" around Sumter Senior Living, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve, Valentines Day and at breakfast every morning too. Make lots of new friends to share the good times. Plenty of activities and exercise classes 6 days a week.

I looked at Sumter Senior Living. I was extremely impressed with it. A lot of the people were on walkers and in wheelchairs which turned me off a little bit, but I didn't see any stress among the people or anything. Carol was awesome. She was the one that took me on the tour and she's the one I was working with. She is beyond fabulous. I saw the dining area, and I was very impressed with it. If something should happen down the line and I'm not doing well and I do need to go into independent or assisted living, I would probably have it in writing that I may like to be transferred there. I would have to go visit it again to try the food and everything, but I can't say enough about Carol. The room that she went to show me was gorgeous. I looked at a studio and I looked at a one-bedroom. Very impressive. They had their own little kitchenette and they had the bathroom. What I saw was very clean. The salon wasn't open, but she did show me where the salon was. I liked the fact that it was close enough to The Villages.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father stayed in Sumter Senior Living for seven years. It's awesome. The place was very clean. The room sizes were nice. Tons of activities, a lot of outings, they had vehicles they could take, they went to all kinds of different shows and they went to a horse racing event, so a lot of outdoor activities, and they had plenty of indoor things for those residents who didn't necessarily like to go out anywhere. There was a fitness center, there was a pool, there were all kinds of arts and crafts, and there was a golf simulator. The thing about The Villages too, and where he was, as a resident you can use The Villages. It's a humongous golf community and there are over 40 golf courses. He and his friends used to go golfing once or twice a week, that's one of his passions, so he got to truly enjoy a lot of the activities that they had there. He made lots of good friends, for him there was a lot of camaraderies. There were four of them, four guys, so that every morning they had breakfast together, every night they had dinner together. It's an awesome place. It's like Disney World for adults. They changed management companies several times, that's my one complaint, and depending on who's running the place, the staff was fabulous, other times not as great.

My tour of Sumter Senior Living was very good and very informative. The person who helped me took me and gave me all the information was excellent. He was very knowledgeable and kind of matched the apartments to look at with my needs. It looked very clean, very lively, decorated for the holidays, and very appealing. The rooms they showed us were not furnished. The kitchen counters were dark, the cabinets were dark, and that I didn't care for, but that could be remedied by proper decoration or light furniture type of things around. The apartments that I saw had balconies that you can sit on and on the ground floor of the property, there were walking trails. They had a pool outdoors, places to sit, and places to walk around. There's a lot of green areas around. In the independent living, other than the dark decor, it was very lively looking and residents were going back and forth to things. I spoke to some residents.

I went to Sumter Senior Living. They have regular assisted living in the big building next door, and the memory care is in a little building. It's been very well designed for people with memory care needs, and it's really decorated nicely. It was very familiar to me because it's similar to the one where my mom is now. The staff seemed appropriate and the rooms were appropriate. They also have programs, but I didn't get to see any of the residents participating in anything at that time. They just had residents in the dayroom by the TV, which was fine. They have two floors, and I like the way they have provided access to balconies with fresh air and sunshine that are safe for the residents. I think it has really good security. I think that would be a safe place for residents. The staff is definitely very professional.

Sumter Senior Living was very nice, but it's cafeteria style dining. The apartment was way too small. The living room and the second bedroom were too small. It would be good for a single person, but not two. They're ridiculously expensive, plus they want $1,000 for a second person. We want independent living and a maintenance-free residence, but their residence was too small and I don't want to spend my life in a cafeteria. The food was awful. The people that they sat us with to share a meal with and most of the people around us, all complained that they don't have enough staff. They call the cook a chef, but he's no chef. He takes care of all three buildings, so there's no way he can make decent meals or upgraded meals when he's going to cook for three different buildings. It's a very nice building, but I don't want to live there.

Sumter Senior Living is actually our number-one choice on the list. It's very modern, it has everything that we're looking for, and the people who showed us around were very nice. The one-bedroom was perfect. It was it was modern and well laid out. They had a good list of activities. We saw the dining hall, the recreation or exercise room, and the pool area. Everything was well maintained.

The marketing guy at Sumter Senior Living was terrific. We only saw one model, which was the two-bedroom-two-bath, and we did not like the layout; it's not what we want. The facility was very nice and very clean. They have almost all the same amenities that most of them have, like electricity and utilities. They're furnished with a washer and dryer and a small kitchenette. The marketing guy, Nelson, was extremely nice, kind, and helpful; he was a good marketing guy.

Sumter Senior Living was new and beautiful. The rooms were beautiful, and they offered lots of activities. We learned, however, that the average age of the population of these places basically is eighty-one, so they're older. It just seemed like even though there were a lot of activities to take part in, we didn't see much participation, and the pool was too small. These are minor things, though. The staff during the tour was wonderful.

Sumter was very nice, but it was too far, and I wanted something that was closer to me. The staff was very friendly, very professional, and very knowledgeable. If somebody lives in The Villages, this would have been nice. I would have considered it. I think it may have been pricier only because everything in The Villages is pricier. It was one of the higher rent places. It's near a lot of shopping though. If you're The Villages then it's a beautiful community.

A friend of mine moved here after living in The Villages because he has dementia. At first I thought that this place was really nice. It looked just beautiful. But it is the staff of any facility that makes the difference. No matter how small the request that you may ask from the staff here they don't have time to bother with you. It got REALLY bad during COVID when I could not get in to visit him. Since no friends or family were able to visit to see what was going on, they just left him to live like an animal. He kept calling me to tell me that he was hungry! They give them such small amounts of food and they closed the kitchen at 4:30pm so they could not get anything to eat until the next morning. We sent him snacks to try to help but I thought about all the other people there who were also probably hungry who may not have relatives to send them snacks and who also are unable to visit them due to Covid. When we were finally able to see him again we found him naked, and his whole bed covered in feces, they had not cleaned him or his room in who knows how long and he was in bad shape. Of course we moved him to a different facility but I say to you. Don't be fooled by the this place. It looks beautiful but the people don't care about the residents. It is all about money and hiring people at the lowest wage possible (you get what you pay for) and providing the least amount of food and the lowest grade of food that is possible because it is all about profit, not the residents so beware!

I went to Sumter Senior Living. It was a very nice place. I guess the thing I didn't like is there was not enough open space outside compared to the other place I looked at. Everything I've seen was very nice, and it looked very clean. The staff was very nice. She communicated very well, and she was very inviting, friendly, and accommodating. It was very well kept. I've seen their dining room, it looked very clean and nice, people were sitting there, and they seemed happy. The rooms looked nice, spacious, and kept up. I saw a two-bedroom; they were light, and they had a balcony. They have a pool, they do pool activities, they have a gym, they have a beauty parlor, they have a library, they have an exercise room, and they have a bar.

Went on a bus tour of several facilities around The Villages while I was in town and was asked to rate the facilities. I did my homework after and this facility was the second best. Convenient location, one problem that I did find it that it appears that they have a history of deficiencies during state inspections.

I've been to Sumter Place In the Villages a couple of times, and I like it a lot. I think the community was very active and very positive. There are lots of things to do, there are different choices, and there's a lot of people there. In the independent living there are a lot of individual homes or town homes even though they're very close in the community. There are different stages of living. So if you go in there relatively early and then you get a medical condition and decide to be less independent, you can move to a more appropriate part of the community. The residents really love being there, so they're really pleased with it. There's a golf cart within the community, lots of restaurants, lots of stores, and anything you want, even lawyers and medical. It's very highly regarded. It's one place I would consider for the future. They're not living in high-rises. They go out of their way to engage the people around them so there's a lot of camaraderie, and lots of the people are very outgoing.

My mother lives at Sumter Place. Overall it is nice, but staff and management changeover is high,. The food quality continues to decline. Food server quality is inconsistent, as I have seen residents trying to waive down a server on many occassions. Pill distribution has many bad days, which is dangerous. They do bring in entertainment and decorate for holidays. The van drivers are very accomodating. I have many security concerns as side doors are unlocked during the day. The shower area is slippery due to poor drainage. The many living rooms and tv's are lovely. Games like bingo are offered, but with prizes like a can of soda.

We just moved my father into there a little over a month ago. Highlights: 1. Overall the staff is very nice and generally accommodating 2. The food is terrific (watch out for the warm cookies in the afternoon you will get addicted)! 3. They definitely promote social activities. Lowlights: When we moved my Dad in the room was absolutely atrocious. I had to removed rodent dropping from under the sink and there was a distinctive smell in the room. The carpet in the bedroom was supposed to be replaced due to heavy staining. During that first week I put in two work orders to at least have the carpet cleaned. My father has put in several as well. As of this writing it has not been cleaned or replaced!

Staff is not very accommodating. There is supposed to be a point system to determine the level of care received but I've yet to learn how many points my spouse is on. I have to check up on everything, they don't always help her shower and so she goes without. They just dump all of her clothes in the laundry basket so they don't have to hang things up. They've left her shoes laying around and I'm afraid she'll trip over them. The bathroom smells badly as though the drains don't work properly. I think I'll have to move my wife to another facility as she doesn't seem to be receiving the care she needs. The aides are spread too thin and take a long time to respond to a call. They are pleasant but most likely underpaid and overworked.

My relative is struggling here. They do not provide the levels of care that is advertised. Don't move your loved one here and have them suffer with the almost non existent care. The aides hide and hang out together and take a long time to answer a call for help. Everyday I see residents calling for help and no one around to help them.

I visited Sumter Place in The Villages, and I would not go back. It did not seem inviting. The people I met seemed nice, friendly, and accommodating. Their grounds were OK -- nothing spectacular. I was easy to access. The furnishing turned me off. It was not old, but they had very heavy dark furniture that did not look inviting.

Provider Response

Thank you for your review and for visiting Sumter Place in The Villages. While our furniture may not have been appealing, I'm grateful to hear that our team was friendly and accommodating. I wish Sumter Place had felt more inviting to you, as I hope everyone who walks through our doors feels comfortable, you are absolutely right to find an Assisted Living community that makes you feel like you're home. We wish you all the best in finding a community that feels like home and that provides the best care for your loved one.

Sumter Grand is totally independent living. It has lots of stuff going on and is a little bit more expensive and a little newer. It has a big, lavish lobby and an open bar area where you can go in and eat. This place has a very fancy area where you can get flavored water with fruits, croissants, cookies, and all kinds of coffee. The advantage of living in Sumter Grand is the fact that you are a member of The Villages, so you have all rights of The Villages and can go to all of those shindigs, which is a very big advantage because we are very social. We like to get out and get around. They have every kind of club, too. You can have your car downstairs in shaded parking. The first thing you see is the dining room, which is buffet-style for the most part. For breakfast, I know they are definitely a buffet. We ate in the saloon, which is right next door, and the food was delicious.

We had a really nice visit at Sumter Place Assisted Living, but it was just too big for us, and their activities were a little bit steeper than what we were used to. It was a beautiful place, and the accommodations are really nice. The staff who assisted us did a very good job of telling us what we would receive and what we would do there. There were a lot of activities, but most of them were things we didn't necessarily like. There were laundry services, a reading room, and a room where you can do puzzles. They showed us a 1-bedroom with a living room, a bathroom, and an extra room with a microwave where we could eat. The people who work there opened the front door for us and welcomed us, and they were very accommodating.

The first thing I like about Sumter Place in the Villages is that you can use all their amenities and all the things they provide like golf, bowling, and getting discounts on different stores. You had access to all the entertainment. The dining area was very nice. The food was good. They have a lot of woodwork all over which I like, but the rooms are just too dark, and the furniture looks so cheap. The decorations are too dark and gloomy and make me feel moody. I was disappointed. It’s expensive. I think it’s like 3 or 4 stories, and I don’t care for that. It makes me too confined and too claustrophobic when you have to go either up the stairs, use elevators, and then go down hallways to get to your place.

We went to Sumter Place, you go in independent, move to assisted, and they got long term care. We liked that. Everybody was friendly, it was very warm, and when you walked in, you feel comfortable. The restaurant was open all, there’s no set time for meals, and they give you three meals there. They have excursions, activities, and a small pool, and they were within distance of a golf course. We loved the apartments very much; they had corner apartments that seemed to be larger than some of the others, and it was all decorated very nicely.

I visited this facility

Sumter Place is very nice and relatively new. They have independent living that operates under a different name, plus memory care and assisted living. It’s a pretty large, multi-story facility with a 24-hour café serving sandwiches, donuts, pie, cake, and various beverages that the residents can go anytime and get something to eat. The dining room is open from about 7 a.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. It also has a full-service bar and entertainment on a regular basis. The assisted living is an open concept. Instead of hallways, they’ve got living room areas situated every few hundred feet. The residents in the assisted living don’t have any large refrigerator or stoves or anything, but they have a microwave and a small refrigerator. I did not go in to the independent living side, but from what other people have told me that had parents living there, it’s regular apartment-style living with a fine dining restaurant facility.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My brother liked Sumter Place. It was a clean and small facility. They provided assistance to almost everything.
