I have been to Callahan Court many times now and have always enjoyed my visits. There is something about the community that is very welcoming and comforting, the staff members are always so friendly and willing to go that extra mile to really make their residents and visitors feel at home. They welcome family members and visitors anytime, they really appreciate it when families, friends, and visitors are very involved in the progress and care of their loved ones. They are also great at keeping families or other resident contacts up to speed on resident care, status, issues and they do not make a decision regarding the care of a resident until they have successfully made contact with family members or other individuals who make decisions on a residents behalf. You have to remember that this is a memory care community so the residents are not always in the position to be able to make decisions on their own behalf, so their family members or other people may have to step in to make the decisions for them. However, this does not mean that the staff members do not attempt to discuss care and treatment-related issues with the residents themselves. They always make the effort to discuss changes in care services, changes in medications, and so on with the residents first if they at that time are able to comprehend the information and make an informed decision from that information. In memory care some days are better than others, so while a resident may be able to make decisions one day they may not be able to the next so the staff make sure that each of their residents have a family member, close friend, or state appointed power of attorney who have the ability to make responsible and logical decisions on each residents behalf. Now all memory care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, special needs facilities, and other facilities where residents may not always be able to make decisions for themselves are supposed to have these resident contacts in the residents charts, files, care plans, etc. They are supposed to be easy to find and the contact info is supposed to be updated regularly but I cannot tell you how many special care facilities I have been to where this information is missing, outdated, or was never there in first place. I have seen so many times incidents where the staff are frantically trying to find resident contacts in order to inform them of emergencies, care changes, status updates, accidents, etc. but because the contact info is so unorganized they are unable to reach any one for the resident, and in times like these the residents in most cases are unable to say "oh call my son, his number is..." besides even if they were capable of doing this, it is not their responsibility. I just caught myself rambling so I am just going to stop here and say that my point of all of this is that I have never once seen a time where the staff were unable to immediately find and make contact with a residents someone because their information is very organized, easy to find, and always correct as it is regularly verified by the staff. It is important to know that the staff members can and will contact you with any issues relating to your loved one. Can you imagine what it would be like knowing that there was an incident with your loved one and no one called you because they had incorrect contact information? It is the responsibility and duty of the facility staff to make sure all contact info is correct. I can pretty much say for certain that you will never have that issue at Callahan Court.

Everything about the community, the facility itself, the care team, and all other aspects is very perfect for a memory care setting. Everyone who works with the residents are very knowledgeable and skilled and working with various memory disorders, the way they communicate and interact with each resident is so patient and encouraging and nurturing. They are able to really connect with the residents and gain their trust, which can be a difficult feat in this type of unit, and the great thing about the staff members is when they are able to gain that trust -- they know how important and special that trust is so they bend over backwards day in and day out to keep that trust and connection with each resident solid.

There are many activities, entertainment, parties, special celebrations, and things they do around the community to keep the residents active and entertained. Most of the activities, special events, and such have some sort of therapeutic value about them that the residents are able to benefit from, they mostly are all very "hands on" and require the residents to use their five senses which in turn stimulates the residents mind which can result in memories, thoughts, etc. They also offer activities, entertainment and such that are merely for fun, activities and events that are soothing, uplifting, encouraging - and there is always music of some sort some where through out the community, the residents just love music and it works wonders in memory care.

I would absolutely recommend Callahan Court for those looking for a safe, nurturing, and accommodating memory care community for your loved ones to call home. I have always been very proud of what I have seen of the community during my visits and I am sure you will truly enjoy your experience of the facility. Also, for those of you searching for Assisted Living or Retirement Living - Callahan Court has a sister who is just as fantastic! Callahan Village Assisted Living. I also wrote a review about them, I encourage you to check it out.
