I am a friend or relative of a resident

Little Sisters of the Poor - St. Joseph's Home, is a Catholic facility that is managed by the religious order of the same name. It is a Medicaid-approved nursing home that houses residents who have limited resources. When I first visited my neighbor at this facility, I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting to find a run-down nursing home that had drab rooms and sub-par care. My neighbor had been in a private nursing home until she ran out of money, and was then transferred to Little Sisters of the Poor - St. Joseph's Home. I have to admit that this is a very well-run and pleasant home for the elderly who need round-the-clock care. Unlike some of the private nursing homes that I've visited, this one seems to take a genuine interest in both the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents. I think the focus on the spiritual needs helps bring a sense of calmness to the men and women living there. Most of the hands-on care is facilitated by nuns. They are very kind, patient and understanding, which is so very different than what you find in the private nursing facilities. It takes a special person to enter the religious life, and it is reflected in the care they provide. The residents at Little Sisters of the Poor - St. Joseph's Home all have their own rooms. They are not huge, but they are large enough for the resident to move about in if they are in a wheelchair (and most residents are in wheelchairs). Regular medical care is provided on site, so the residents don't have to be transported to other facilities. There is a program of activities that are appropriate to the mental and physical status of the residents. I've seen better activity programs at other places, but my friend and the other people I've met there seem content with what is offered. The spiritual support is probably stronger here than in any other place I've visited. All in all, this is a surprisingly nice place for people who have limited resources and who want to spend their golden years in some sort of spiritual reflection, while still getting the type of medical services they need.
