I am/was a resident of this facility

I was at the Watermark By The Bay for five months. It was nice. It was close to my family and close to my medical providers because I had to have radiation treatment every day for a month. They took me and they had good transportation. The meals and the food were good. We had a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits, which I liked. They didn't have much outdoor space. They were kind of in an urban area. The staff was good. There was little turnover among the care providers because I was independent and I wasn't having any medications. I needed to be pushed down to the meals. I was in a wheelchair at that point because I couldn't walk very far because of my shortness of breath. They were very attentive to that and got me to my doctor's appointments. I didn't have the medical needs that they provided me. The activities were good. They have yoga and tai chi, the usual bingo, and they would take you out for walks around the block. I like the diversity and that was a plus.

We're considering The Watermark By The Bay because it's a 10-minute walk from where we live. The overall experience with my tour was very good. We got a lot of information and we saw the facility. It was good. We saw several rooms. The place was clean, neat, and well-lit. It looked safe for the residents to be in. I would describe the staff as caring, thoughtful, and non-invasive.

What a gorgeous facility! It is spotless and the staff are all so nice. I toured for my mother with the Executive Director and she was very kind and was able to answer all of my questions. We had lunch in the dining room and the meal was outstanding. My sister is going to need a facility when she moves to the East Bay in September and we plan to make Watermark by the Bay our new home. Very impressive.

Provider Response

Dear Joanne, Thank you for this stellar review! We are thrilled to hear about your wonderful experience touring our community and having lunch with us. It would be an honor to have both you and your sister part of our family. Please let us know how we can help you make the move!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The Watermark By The Bay has much to offer to their residents. Cozy rooms, a stellar, professional and caring staff and many interesting activities for a resident to partake in. I have two friends there who have improved remarkably and they are both very happy to be there. One of them has been there for many years and the other since the end of 2022. They enjoy the activities there more than the ones I offer them; and I've offered many. They love the food. As a visiting loved one, I love the food! I have eaten there many times! They like living here more than they did at their previous Piedmont-Oakland area home and another care home where the stay was very short. I have never encountered a problem with the staff there. The Watermark is an experience that one would have to encounter to feel the goodness that is there. I realized within a week or so that the many seniors who live at the apartment complex where my friends once lived prior to moving into the The Watermark By The Bay don't really have much to do as far as activities. Actually, I've seen them get their mail or peek out of their window whenever they hear a loud sound or are unsure if a family member or a complete stranger is at their doorstep. It is no exaggeration to say that The Watermark By The Bay reminds me of a kind of pleasure cruise. I based my Five-star rating on my two friends experience as well as mine as a visitor. I actually feel like a guest when I go there. Everyone is so kind and patient. They work very hard to maintain the quality of care and everything related to it. The Golden Years are here at The Watermark By The Bay. Many thanks! Ignacio A.

My husband is at The Watermark by the Bay. He is happy there. I'm happy with the place as well because it's nice. It's located in a spacious area. My husband thought it doesn't look like a senior living facility. It looks like a hotel with a very high ceiling and a beautiful entrance. You can choose a room with a carpet or without and with windows or none. The rooms have their own bathroom and bars if needed. They're spacious with closets. He was in independent living but since he was getting so independent and wandering a lot, they decided to put him on the second floor where he cannot be exiting the floor because he has memory issues and sometimes he gets confused. They have 24-hour security. They have a gym, yoga, musical activities, arts and crafts, they take them out, and they have games to keep them entertained. The food is very good. They have a chef and three meals are served. They have soup, the main dish, and dessert. The staff is very supportive and reachable. It's a very good place. It was recommended by a nurse coming to assist my husband and her grandma was in that place for seven years. I went to look and I liked it. It's very central and close to me. It's very reasonably priced. I'm very pleased. I would recommend this place.

I visited this facility

Although the facility is near an elevated freeway, the floors I toured were very quiet. The staff, as we passed them, seemed committed to their jobs, neither rushing through them nor hanging back avoiding them. I did not have an opportunity to try the food. I was looking specifically at respite care post-surgery, and was disappointed that those rooms do not have a full kitchen.

Provider Response

Hello and thank you for your feedback. We apologize if we didn’t have exactly what you were looking for, but do hope we can be of some assistance to you in the future. Thanks again.

I visited my Godmother did not like her stay there because she complained about not getting the help she needed. I went to visit her one day her arm had been put under her wheel chair and was stuck. She was in a lot of pain and her leg was in excruciating pain the workers ignored it. . Eventually someone there gave her Covid and she died. Its a shame to live 99 years and die because someone who is suppose to help you brings you COVID. I tried talking to the director about maybe requiring workers to rapid test if their is an outbreak like they do at the schools. We test everyone periodically. The director was abrupt and did not want to discuss what is going on I am very sad because Seniors are vulnerable and when someone refuses to have a discussions about possibly improving safety protocols it is wrong. My Godmother paid 7500 a month and I would not wish what she got on anyone.

Our experience with The Watermark by the Bay was very good. The staff seemed to be interested in introducing the place to me. They knew what they wanted and they were courteous to me. I could only see the rooms that were not being used, and of course they've cleaned them up, so they were clean.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom is currently at The Watermark by The Bay in Emeryville. She's in assisted care. We chose it with the help of an advisor. In retrospect, I don't think it was the best choice for my mother. They don't seem as flexible as we thought they would be. They don't seem as responsive either. It's all complicated with COVID, though; things are pretty messed up. For instance, you go a year plus without being able to visit. They don't have me singing their praises. I think they're trying hard, but I'm not sure they've gotten it yet. It's a five-story building, the upkeep is OK, and I think they take good care of it. I think some of the staff are good but not everybody. They don't always knock on the door, which my mother would like. Sometimes, when they know I'm there, they’ll knock. Other times, when I'm not there, they don't knock. That is a bad sign to me, pretending to be something that they're not. I've only eaten one meal there and it was adequate. My mother's not happy with it, but I also think she's a tough audience. She hasn't participated in any of the activities, and they're pretty limited. The price is standard for this area. It's fairly expensive, but this area is an expensive area to live in. They could try to be a little more responsive to their residents and make sure that they're fully staffed.

Provider Response

I am/was a resident of this facility

I have been a resident for 2.5 years. The apartment is comfortable. The food was very good but it's so-so now if you're lucky. Beef is of poor quality. Vegetables are usually frozen and over-cooked. The staff don't always order what is on the menu or get dishes to the dining room promptly. Activities are limited other than a movie, sometimes just out of the theatre. There is a weekly outing, but it doesn't last long enough to spend much time anywhere. It's rarely to a museum or gallery and never to a live performance. The location is good but on a main street. There is a large shopping center across the street. There is good mass transit, but no one but me uses it. Most residents don't have the ability to know or care that we are in a great metropolitan area or the mental health to take advantage of it. There is little in the way of dining options nearby and we are never taken out to eat. The review that said that some residents routinely set out front or in the lobby staring blankly in to space is accurate. Many do not have the intellectual capacity to take part in the limited activities offered. Weekly housekeeping is promised and paid for, but management has often not been able to keep this promise. Staff are very caring. Most of us have staff handle our medications, which is a benefit.

Provider Response

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’ll share your compliments with our caring team to thank them for loving what they do. I’m glad it shows. I also appreciate your feedback for improvement. Please call me anytime to discuss in greater detail. We are committed to 100% resident satisfaction. Sincerely, Kristi Roberts, Managing Director

She was at Bayside Park and she was there as a patient of Kaiser. They have a program that does intensive therapy. Some of the residents were more on the independent living side of the spectrum and the others were sort of just shuffling around and drooling. The amenities for the Kaiser people are relatively Spartan and very basic because you're only in for two weeks, but you have access to the full facility, you are a resident there, and you can participate as much as you want (or not). The studios start at $5,000 and goes up from there. They do lots of activities for the residents and we were very impressed with the choices on the menu. The biggest thing that impressed me was that she was due her 5:00 p.m. medication and we took her out shopping for shoes, and we got back around 5:30 p.m., and her meds person was down in the lobby waiting for her and knew her by her name.

Bayside Park was a lot more posh and fancier but my dad didn’t like it. It just didn’t click with him. The staff was very nice and very warm. My brother had a real nice rapport with the director of the place whom he talked to a number of times before we brought our father there. When we walked in, they knew who we were right away without saying anything; the receptionist figured it out. It’s right down the block from my brother like a minute away so it’s very good to be there. We went in the evening and there were a lot of people out walking around and not looking the healthiest. My dad said it looked a little more like a hospital and I had a feeling that that put him off because you could tell he was immediately not interested. Their apartments were beautiful, nicely decorated and new but it was slightly more urban setting in an apartment building. It has a little more of a country feel and it felt more like the places that he’s lived in before. There is a shopping center which we thought he would like but I think it might have been a little too urban for him. The dining area is nice. The kitchen is good and my brother ate there. He said it was excellent and that was a big draw but it cost a lot more. It was almost $2000 more a month. It was very clean; everything was in its right place or looked like it. It was really the place we were pushing for.

I visited this facility

We were able to visit Bayside Park. It's in a very busy street and there's no garden. People were sitting right in front of the building in wheelchairs. That was not very pretty. The concept of going in and paying $7000 rent for my wife for one bedroom was not appealing either. If you need any additional services then the prices goes up.

Provider Response

I’m sorry to hear that your first impression of Bayside Park was not more positive. Busy streets aren’t ideal, but our urban setting does mean proximity to great museums, destinations, parks, restaurants and the liveliness of the East Bay. Our residents see this as a perk and our community bus is always on the move. In addition to dining, transportation and fun excursions, the residence you mention also comes with gardens on the rooftop and second floors, exercise room, weekly housekeeping, classes, clubs, etc. There’s even a massage therapist on site. Many of our residents do indeed like to sit out front and observe the goings-on of the world from the comfort of their front porch. It’s a great place to gather and chat and we don’t discourage it. I wish you the best in finding the community that’s just right. Best regards, Mike Hughes, Managing Director, Bayside Park

My dad is at Bayside Park. The experience is overall positive, but they are not always on top with specific medications and care needs as much as I think that they should be. They are probably undertrained and understaffed. They need to improve on the oversight in care of the patients who need a higher level of care. However, maintenance and upkeeping are good. The food is OK. The rooms are nice.

Bayside Park has excellent facilities. It is a bit big and probably a little impersonal. It is very expensive. I'd say the facility is a four, but the price is way above the odds.

I like the layout and the condition of Bayside Village. It was set up very well for Alzheimer's patients. They also have male staff to take care of male patients, which is very, very smart and ideal for my dad. The quality of the food is good. However, I think they need more staff.

A good friend's dad stayed here for months & as we visited got to see the happenings on the inside. They strive to be unique by keeping seniors active with activities, opportunities to keep learning and growing by staying active in the community. They really take the time to notice what appeals to the senior community and tries to implement it! AND they have some holistic practices keeping it trendy too!

I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. It's fabulous. They offer assisted living, independent living, and dementia care. It's in a new building in an arty part of Emeryville that's really a work of art in itself. Walking into it is like walking into a modern museum. There's a stunning arch, skylights, beautiful roof gardens. The whole independent living section has true apartments that are gorgeous and come complete with housekeeping services. The assisted living units are also nice, graciously appointed apartments. And the dementia care units are nicely appointed and spacious, with a full restaurant-style/catering kitchen. There's even a full gym, with physical therapy and massage on site"”and always a lot of art on display. There are a number of artists who live there. It's not just that it has the kind of ambiance that appeals to families, though. It also walks the walk in terms of care. The family that owns it and the staff are totally wonderful. Very engaged. They know the residents well, and they offer very skilled care. The last time I was there, the chef who works there was walking around asking each person for their favorite childhood recipes, and he used that to plan meals. Considering all that, it's reasonably priced. This place is so awesome, I want to live there.

When you walk in the door, you think it's a place you'd like to live yourself. The facility is gorgeous in every way, with everything under the sun under its roof--exercise facilities, exercise programs, a wading pool, any number of workshops, beautiful quiet rooms. They couldn't have given my mother-in-law better care, including providing lots of activities meant to "encourage" her memory. On the staff are very caring people, who couldn't treat the residents there more respectfully. We would visit everyday"”and the staff would always welcome us warmly, even bringing us food at mealtimes. The private rooms are like elegant hotel rooms"”beautiful. The cost seemed like a bargain, at about $4,000 per month.
