I am a friend or relative of a resident
It has good facilities. They have a bus to take people around to local stores which is nice, but often times care was inadequate. What happens with assisted living facilities is that they take in people who are not appropriate for the facility in order to make more money. In other words, the people who should be in an assisted living situation are people who need less care. But because of the desire to make money, they take in heavier care patients and don't hire enough staff for the care of these patients. Therefore this creates a dangerous situation for the person in this situation. Night staff is inadequate and during the day the patients are not visited enough. This was the case with my friend who fell. Eventually he was taken out and got better care in a smaller facility. I knew a caregiver who worked at Oceanview and quit because she just could not handle the many patients she was assigned to. The staff tries their best but is overloaded.
This facility is located in the beautiful coastal town of Newport, which is my favorite town in Oregon. I love that this facility is so close to the ocean, it gives the residents many opportunities to go to the beach, visit the little shops near the boardwalk, and visit the many other attractions that Newport has to offer.
The facility itself is located in a beautiful location, the landscaping and grounds are gorgeous and the residents are able to safely explore the outdoors. There are many things for the residents to do outside, there are little sitting areas where I always see the residents socializing with one another, and I just love the ocean breeze that is all around you.
The inside of the facility is lovely and very home-like, I can tell that the staff puts a lot of effort in to providing a comfortable and safe environment for the residents. The community offers Independent and Assisted Living, and Respite Care. The apartments are very spacious and resident-friendly. for being studios and one bedrooms, there is actually quite a lot of space to move around, and I love, love, love that a lot of the apartments have ocean views. The only complaint I have heard about the facility being located here, is that during different times of the year, the salt can be very thick in the air to where you can almost taste it, but I grew up around here and it never bothered me, and I know that the people who live here now say that you get used to it. Plus, if that is the only complaint I have received about the facility and the location, then that is a really great thing, right?
There are many activities to keep the residents occupied and active. They also seem to always be throwing some party, celebration, or event and they bring in live entertainment for the residents all of the time. There is not a shortage of things to do in this facility.
Oceanview is a very laid-back and comfortable facility, the staff are so friendly and I can tell they really love working with and taking care of the residents. They are so patient and encouraging with the residents and when they have some down time, they choose to spend it by doing fun things with the residents, like taking walks, helping them work on jigsaw puzzles, watching TV with them.
On one of my visits, a daughter-in-law of one of the residents told me that one weekend they were not able to make their weekly visit to see their mom and their mom was pretty upset about it, because she looked forward to their visits every week. She told me that during that weekend the staff knew she was upset and lonely, so one of the staff members took her out to lunch on the boardwalk and then they went to look around the little shops. She said that when her mom called her later that night and went on and on about what a wonderful day she had. The daughter-in-law told me she could not believe that the staff member went out of her way to do something like that for her mom. She said it made her mom feel so special, and that little day trip was all her mom talked about for weeks. She said that her mom was not used to people doing special things like that for her and she said every weekend when she visits her mom she sees the staff bending over backwards to make every resident happy and comfortable. She said that they feel so blessed to know their mom is in such loving and safe care. She said the one thing she never worries about is if her mom is being treated well. She told me that she is always telling people how great the facility is. It's when I hear stories like that from residents/family members that my faith in senior care communities is revived.
Oceanview is one of my favorite facilities because of first, the staff are exceptional and the residents and staff are as close to a family as a facility can get, and second, the location. I mean c'mon, who wouldn't want to look out their bedroom window and see the Pacific Ocean! I HIGHLY recommend this facility. I know that you and yours will love how friendly and welcoming the staff, residents, and the facility itself really is.
