My sister was in Truewood by Merrill. They didn't allow her to come back there after she left the hospital. They didn't give me ample time or warning. They asked me to buy one of those professional recliner chairs and I bought it, but they didn't let her come back, and I wasn't very happy about that. The staff is very professional. They helped her when she needed to go out. My sister enjoyed the food. They have bingo, exercise class, and drawing or coloring. They have a nice courtyard and gym. They have physical therapy classes.

Truewood by Merrill, New Bern is nice as you come into the community areas. It has a beautiful living room there, and they have a grand piano and a fireplace. Those areas are very beautiful. They have updated some things. They had luxury vinyl flooring that looked like wood. You can have a companion room. Instead of having a little walk-in closet or a normal closet, you have this huge wardrobe that sits one on the right and one on the left. It's a huge old cabinet that's been painted about 75 times. It's on wheels, and you have to open these creaky doors. My mom happened to be right behind the door that opened into the room, so every time we wanted to get it closed, somebody would want to walk in the room and almost hit me or hit my little mom. The toilet was almost completely falling over, and they put some huge bolts in there. It was not good. The staff was the worst thing. After you go past the receptionist, you have to sign in, walk down these huge halls and get to the station where my mom was (Her room was directly down the hall, the last room). There would be five girls sitting there on their cell phones and they would not even lift their heads and look at you. I took gifts to those girls, I took food to those girls, and I gave clothing to the receptionist there (from my little girl) as she had had two young girls, but they were rude. When they found out we were leaving, they were horrible to me and my mother. I was not happy with the assisted living, which is why I brought my mom home. It was not good. People were sitting around doing absolutely nothing. Every week, I would go in and do my mom's laundry. A girl that works there offered to do my mom's laundry if I would pay her $45 a week. It was supposed to be done for free, but she would do a better job in the same washing machines with the same rotten soap, and so I was like, 'No'. I would go in and clean up the entire bathroom because it was dirty. They never wiped over things. They cleaned the bathtub, but they never really wiped the vanities. And they allowed people to bring in so much clutter that it's bad. They let my mom's roommate have a cabinet that had glass figurines, and it went all the way to the ceiling. And then the little dresser that my mom had, the roommate put all these glass figurines up there, too. I had to ask them, 'Can you please move those off my mother's dresser?' My mom's roommate's daughter would drop off a day-old bakery, and she would have five or six plastic containers filled with donuts, cupcakes, and half a cake, so they had a huge bug problem. They had an activity room at the end of the hall, but they didn't make much effort to get people down there to do anything. If you came, you came, and if you didn't, you didn't. They did bingo and some little crafts and stuff like that. They did have a nice, beautiful Christmas party every year that I attended with my mom. It would be in the dining room for the people that were in the independent living. So, they would have it there. For the entire time that my mom was there going on three years, they had promised that they were going to redo their dining room. There was a dining room on one side across the hall, and then another tiny dining room on the other side, and they were cramped in there like you wouldn't believe it. They could hardly walk in there with their walkers. They had to leave the walkers out in the hallway, and then someone would take the walkers to them, and they could barely get around to serve up the food there. They may want to look into the staff that they have there, that they need to be more welcoming, that they don't get to have an attitude because somebody is leaving and just all of a sudden treat them terribly just because they're taking their loved one out. My mom is this little sweet little lady and I do not know why they acted that way. It's just like they had an attitude instantly.

Mom moved to Truewood by Merrill, New Bern. The accommodations are nice, acceptable, and clean. The food is good. It's affordable and the people are nice. The facility is well-maintained and easy to get around. I think they have a stylist that comes during the week, and when I first visited there they had a Mardi Gras party. They also have a salon and an area where they can meet for groups and activities.

Truewood by Merrill, New Bern is a beautiful place. The atmosphere is great and the food is great. Everybody seems to be so nice. The staff is great. I'm in a two-bedroom apartment and it's really nice. When you come in the door, it's a kitchenette, refrigerator, stove, and sink. Then you go straight down into the living room, which is very nice. On the right, there's a one-bedroom, which I'm not using for a bedroom. I'm using it for my computer and my lift chair. When you come in the door on the left, there's the bedroom that I'm in. It's a nice bedroom. There's a long closet space in both bedrooms. It has a pantry that's really big and nice. It has a big, nice bathroom, and nice windows that you can see out. They've got something all the time. They have three meals a day and the meals are really good. They have bingo, bridge, cards, canasta, and exercise classes, and they have a guy that comes and sings and plays the guitar. They have a lot of activities. They have a preacher that comes on Sundays. They have ice cream socials, like if somebody has a birthday. The value for the money is good. I might move to a one-bedroom later on because it is expensive.

Courtyards at Berne Village is great. The people are nice, and the food is good. There are more things to do than you could choose. They have transportation, trips to different places, and they'll take me to doctors' appointments. They have a clubhouse that's constantly busy. The staff members are very good, pleasant, always talking to you when you're going to eat, and they ask you want you want. It's like one big family. There are at least 28 buildings, each with about five or six people living in different rooms. There are walking paths throughout, and it's well laid out. The people are constantly doing different things.

I was very impressed with Courtyards at Berne Village. It was a very nice community. The staff members were extremely wonderful. They said that if I didn't like the color of the wall, I could buy the paint and the maintenance people would take care of it. I really like the place. They were so very wonderful. The facilities were wonderful, too. I had lunch there, and the lunch was good. The staff members were incredible.
