Finding a home in the Central Valley of California for your senior loved one is easier than you think. The solution is the assisted living community run by the only Certified Care Manager in Merced County: Amie Marchini.

With a bachelor’s in Gerontology, the study of aging, Ms. Marchini opened Mission Gardens Assisted Living in 2003 after a handsome renovation and conversion from its previous incarnation -- as a convent. (Yes, Mission Gardens was formerly the home of the sisters of the Immaculate Heart and priest residence of the Catholic Churches of Merced.)

The cozy, 8,000-square-foot Mission Gardens comfortably accomodates 15 people. This intimate size allows for special services, such as accompaniment by a manager or supervisor to the hospital in the case of an emergency. Just imagine the friendships that develop with a small group of people.

Special outings include Senior Day, held at the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School, where residents enjoy children's performances, bingo and special gifts. In October of each year, a special luncheon to seniors and their families at the Bear Creek Pumpkin Patch.

Administrator Amanda Bates says her job is satisfying because she knows Mission Gardens contributes to the quality of residents’ lives. "I know we’re taking the burden off of a family member... making a difference."

I am a friend or relative of resident

Words cannot express the quality of care shown my mother during her stay at Mission Gardens. The staff go over and above to provide a “homelike” atmosphere, while being respectful to each resident’s individual needs. My family and mother felt “at home” the minute we came through the door. Thank you Amy and staff for providing an option for seniors and their families that is clearly superior to other more sterile environments. Merced is fortunate to have such a valuable resource for those we hold dear.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Since my dad moved into Mission Gardens, he went from walking, to walking with a walker. He needs to be active, because his muscle atrophy is at such a quick pace. So he really needs physical activity. It's vital to his health.

I visited this facility

I visited the Mission Gardens Assisted Living facility in the August of 2012. I went their with my girlfriend to visit her grandmother. It was on a weekend so it was pretty busy with guests visiting family and such. The environment was warm and had a great atmosphere. The staff was very helpful and kind in how they treated the guests as well as the ones living there. Her grandmother expressed to us that she has a good time living in this facility. She said that the food is good that she gets. Also she has made many friends living here. She really likes her caregivers and has created special bonds with them. She said that the activities hosted their are fun as well, including arts and crafts time as well as music. I would recommend this facility to others, as in all, it is a very nice home. 5/5.
