I visited this facility

I liked Brookdale Mandarin Central overall. There was no least that I liked about it. It was a medium-sized center. The unit layout was very nice. It was very comfortable being there. The level of the residents' mental problems seemed to be mild. You saw no one that was acting up and looking like they needed to be in some other type of facility. They were mild memory care patients that were highly self-sufficient. They had a courtyard and a beauty shop and a barber shop where someone would come in and offer that service. On Tuesdays, residents that wanted to go shopping could go shopping. I saw a schedule and each Tuesday, the shopping bus goes to various outside stores that residents could shop at.

I visited this facility

I went to Brookdale Mandarin Central. It was my first one, so I personally was very nervous. I didn't know what I was doing or what I was looking for (for my mom). They were very nice. Two ladies gave me the tour and told me what it was all about. I learned a lot from it, and I thought that my mother wasn't quite ready for the full memory care yet. It was a small facility, very basic, and very accommodating to somebody who really needs a lot of care. I'm hoping that she's not in that category yet. It was very small, quaint, and a little older. It wasn't for her, but they educated me a lot on what all the assisted living means and all that stuff. I was very grateful for their time. I like that it was kind of a small room and easy to maneuver. You had a bedroom, a little dining area, and a kitchenette. I think that would have been perfect for my mom. It was a quaint room, which is all they need at that stage in life, I think. Nothing too complicated. They were doing some kind of memory quiz or something. They had a group in one of their senior rooms doing some activities.

Brookdale Mandarin Central was nice. It was just older and wasn't as big of a layout as where my mom is now. The staff was very nice. The rooms were also nice, but they were all carpeted. It was just a smaller community with a smaller area for eating and different activities. They didn't have the amenities like where my mom is now. It's on a busy area.

I visited this facility

We are moving into Brookdale Mandarin Central next week. We went to visit there, and it seemed to have everything we wanted. The people there are very helpful, very nice, and if you go there, you can stay there, and not leave there to go to another facility, you can stay there for the rest of your life, and they can take care of you all the way through. The room we got is of very nice size, we have two bedrooms, a living room, two bathrooms, each room is a nice size, and it's got amenities in it that a lot of the other places don't have.

Brookdale Mandarin Central is a wonderful facility. They offer a lot of activities like daily exercise classes, nail polishing, sing-alongs on a big TV, and a nature walk where they take the residents outside. They had a very strong and a full activity schedule. They have a really nice little courtyard that they can sit out in with beautiful plants. I was extremely impressed. It was extremely clean and well-taken care of. The staff was fantastic, extremely professional, friendly, and made us feel very welcome. They set out lunch for us and it was delicious and great.

I visited Brookdale Mandarin Central. I liked the lobby area. They had a nice salon and a café. They seemed really busy and kind of upbeat. A lot of people went in and out. However, when I saw the apartment there, they were pretty tiny and not very nice-looking. The outside stuff looked good, but not the inside so much. Maybe that was good for people who were always out and about, but maybe not so good for others who would not be able to go out. The apartment I saw looked kind of run down. However, there was a nice trail outside for walking.

Brookdale Mandarin Central is totally Alzheimer’s. That was certainly the best place, I was most impressed. Wonderful programs that was all geared towards Alzheimer’s, and if I would have chosen anywhere for my parents to go, that would have been where I would have them go. It was just very well-cared for, and the residents were very well-taken care of. It’s a locked facility and everything was very clean, they had all kinds of activities, and there was always someone talking with them and checking on the people who were wondering. It was very uplifting, very bright, and I was most impressed with that.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

We used Brookdale Mandarin for respite care for my mother. The staff seemed very helpful but not competent. I noticed that they were giving my mother incorrect meds and so that bothered me and that scared me. I talked with numerous people to ensure that that would not happen again and had my children go in on a basis and check to see. They read the list wrong. She was supposed to get a half of the pill and they were giving her a whole one. They said that they would do laundry either once or twice a week, where I couldn't tell that any laundry had been done with her being there for 10 days. The rooms were very nice. It was an older facility and it could use a paint job. For the respite care, they put my mother in a furnished apartment and it was very well furnished and very nice. She had one of those high beds but she was having a hard time getting up on it. So what they did was they took it off the frame and put it on the floor for her, which made it perfect. I thought that was nice. They did give her TV but no remote. From what I could see and what my son told me, they never bothered to hook the TV up the entire time she was there, so she had no TV. However, she had outside activities with the groups, so that helped. The food was quite good. They had a nice variety. I had no complaints with the food.

Brookdale Mandarin Central just went into a major multimillion dollar remodeling. The facility is clean, bright, and fresh. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They have special dietary programs for residents who have dementia, so everything is fresh and healthy. I would highly recommend them.

I have had the pleasure of dealing with the staff at this facility and they go well above and beyond their duties! They are kind and caring. The recent renovations have made the place fantastic and the residents are engaged and provided with a range of activities and opportunities.

We choose Brookdale Mandarin for my grandmother because it has the care that we are looking for. I am pretty happy with everything. The staff is very helpful. They have activities. They do cooking and gardening. They are very active. I like that it caters specifically for Alzheimer's patients.

I visited this facility

I was not really happy with Brookdale Mandarin Central. It's an old facility, and when we first walked in, a lot of residents there were more like wheelchair bound and needed more help, and my father doesn’t really need a lot of help. I feel it to be more like a nursing home than assisted living. The rooms were really small and really old looking. The staff is wonderful, and they are very nice. The facility looks kind of dark and depressing.

Provider Response

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. The community will be undergoing a full renovation over the next two months, and we would love for you to keep us in mind and come back to see our progress!

What I don't like about Sterling House of Jacksonville is that they built a covered walkway to the entrance of the facility, and all the residents, with all sorts of medical conditions, just lined up on each side and eyed everybody who came in and went. If someone is coming or going, it's kind of depressing. Also, the dining area is large, but it has dark wall paneling, and there isn't that much sunlight coming in. I find it extremely dark. It's probably from the 70's or 80's era, so it's not bright. It would not motivate somebody; it is just like walking into an old room. The staff is extremely friendly, the cleaning people, and all that, but the residents seem more subdued. I would associate that to the atmosphere of the facility. The whole facility looks clean, but it's extremely outdated. If I had to say one thing about it, I'd say that it seemed depressing. I think it is still recommendable; the cost is a little bit less per month. I wouldn't say, "Don't go", because the staff seems like they are really trying to bend over backwards for the people. I am just saying that if someone were to become a resident there, I think it needs to be somebody who is a bit more subdued. They have programs and all, but the people aren't that active; they seem more like, for lack of a better way to describe it, like they were somehow sedated. They just stare at you, except for a few that come up and say hello.

Sterling House was very lovely. It was not a big place, and I thought it were nice and cute. They let me go in, and I saw the rooms. They were lovely. It was a two-bedroom that had a shower, which was wheelchair accessible. It had a single bed, and they had a separate room in the area that had a chair. They gave three meals a day and they would assist you 24/7. It was very nice. They were sitting at the dining table and having lunch. Most of them were in their late 70s and 80s. Everyone seemed happy and seemed to be more independent. It was kind of a downtown older section where the homes were like where I lived.

The sterling house in Jacksonville is the only one I have visited , but due to their amazing care , the company has ventured out into other cities as well. If that wasn't enough to grab your attention maybe the personal chefs or huge rooms will. Either way if this is your final destination or pit stop along the way , you won't be disappointed. I was lucky enough to play tennis and walk around the premises with some of the residence. Their feedback was exceptional of the facility , and when I asked if there was anything they would like to change , they replied with a humble I have all that I need.

My father in law lived here until he passed away in 2010. Other than having a mix up with his medications on a regular basis, he was treated well and seemed to be taken care of well. We never had a problem with that. Only with his medications not always being administered in time because the center wouldn't always contact his doctor for refills.

I was looking for a good assisted living facility for my mother, and I finally found that beautifull place. My mom have two months living there and she is very happy and motivated and I love that. I am impressed with the service that they give to people and how they care about every single of them. The quality of service is highly trustable and is complemented with the attention of the staff, they also cares about the health & the preferences of the people and make them feel comfortable there, so I trust that my mom is in an really good place. I higly recommend this facility to other people that are looking for a great living place for them, or for them relatives.
