I am a friend or relative of a resident

My father needed a memory care facility. When I went there to Emeritus at River Oaks, it hit me. They made me feel very comfortable. It's very clean, very reasonable, and the care that they have suits my father really well. He's only been in there for about two weeks. At this point he's really happy. He really liked it. He gets along with the people in there. No complaints at all. If there was, he would call me right away.

I visited this facility

Emeritus was in an older building. The people there seem to be very nice and cordial. However, I didn't like it because their air-conditioning units are like in a hotel room. I thought they would make a lot of noise. Although my mother is hard of hearing so it probably wouldn't disturb her. But I know how annoying they are in hotel rooms, so that turned me off a little bit.

I visited this facility

Emeritus at River Oaks would be one of my first choices for my mother. It's a facility that allows cat or a small dog. That was the one specification my mother wanted, so it would be a good fit for my mother. The food is just like home basically, and issues as far as people with specific diets or eating disorders will be attended to. It's like an apartment-type feel. Everything will be provided and the services will be depending on the level of needs. The staff is friendly, very helpful and willing to go the extra miles to get me whatever needed as far as the information goes. I think it's really well-staffed. Medical professionals are coming in and out three or four times a week to check on her and administer medicines if needed. I was very impressed quite honestly.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Both parents moved in at the end of March and we were all highly satisfied with the setting. Their apartment was in very good condition and spacious. Housekeeping and laundry services were satisfactory, and the meals served by the dining room were very good by institutional standards. The facility itself is not the most modern or the most elegant in design, but the buildings are well-maintained and the atmosphere is comfortable and homelike. The best thing about this placement is the staff. From management level down to housekeepers and kitchen servers, the staff has a wonderful attitude. They are friendly, kind and caring, and always take time to talk with the residents. There are lots of scheduled activities and events for the residents, and occasional bus trips for shopping and recreation. Common areas are provided for socialization and family members are welcome at all times. Apartments have safety features such as grab bars in the bathrooms, and if special items are needed the maintenance staff will install them. Each resident has a call button for emergencies and nursing staff is on-call 24 hours. The main reason we chose this facility for our family is that they have three different areas: (1) an independent living section; (2) an assisted living section; and (3) a "memory care" section specifically for those with Alzheimer's or other dementia. My father-in-law passed away in July, and my mother-in-law moved to the memory unit in September, where she continues to receive excellent care. If you are looking for a fancy place with crystal chandeliers and a grand piano, this isn't it, but for our money, Emeritus at River Oaks is a safe and comfortable home for your loved one.

I visited this facility

The staff was relatively friendly, though the managers seemed a little annoyed at the time of my visit. The rooms were cleaned, whether it was by the person assigned to clean them or someone else. The cafeteria was in really good order, clean, neat, organized. They had plenty of nice outside areas. The staff responded when there was a problem promptly. The food was well prepared and tasted just as good. The decor felt homey and nice, comfortable. The furniture was also well. They host little events from time to time and have booths with activities and venders selling things. The live-in residents were friendly and didn't seem to have any bad experiences to share. They also seemed to enjoy it there.

I think that the Emeritus at River Oaks nursing home is a great place for elders that need support to live. My great grandmother lives there and they have a whole specially designed building for people with Alzheimer's to live which is what she has. She seems to be very happy there, and every time I have visited she is clean and looks well taken care of. They give her the support that is very hard for me to provide. They have a wonderful staff full of nice, caring nurses. Overall, I feel comfortable leaving her at this place knowing that she is in a good hands.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My father who has Alzheimer's has been living at River Oaks since June 1, 2011. The staff is very understanding and good to the residents as well as helpful to family members dealing with this change of life. My dad is in the locked-down, memory care facility so the security is very tight. They are vigilant on keeping the environment secure so residents do not wander outside. Each resident has their own room or they can share a suite. You can rent the furnishing from River Oaks or you can have your own delivered. There is an area where they can freely walk outside onto a porch and get fresh air. The large common area is where they gather for activities and dining. The staff assures that each resident is seated and gets the proper meal for their needs. They provide laundry service, housekeeping, snacks, meals, various activities such as bingo, trips outside to ride around town or visit the beach, medication disbursment, assistance with bathing and personal hygiene, and many many more everyday tasks. This service is so important to people with Alzheimer's as they progress in the disease and loved ones are no longer capable of caring for them. Overall, I think River Oaks is a good place for my dad and I am comfortable with the accomodations.
