My grandfather began to deteriorate very quickly, and although my grandmother did not want to accept it, our family had a history of Alzheimer's Dementia. It was a devastating blow when the doctor diagnosed him officially. My grandmother continued to care for him, but could no longer do so when he sometimes became slightly violent. The reason that my family and my grandmother chose Asbury Village is because they have a great program, and my grandma and grandpa were able to live there together as a couple. My grandma already had every day assistance at her house from a home health nurse, so the transition from that to Asbury Village was a good one because she needed help herself, and my grandpa simply needed care she could not give him. This is a sometimes sad, and scary fact of life, but when you love someone you have to give them the best care that you can. Because Asbury Village allows couples to stay together, my grandma is able to get the assistance she needs, like meal preparation and laundry services, and my grandpa is able to get the medical treatment he needs. They have a library, and a beauty shop, and a piano that many of the residents love to play or sit and listen to. It is very challenging for my grandma to still be very sharp in her mind and have to see her husband go through this disease, but the staff at Asbury truly care about my grandparents and do all that they can, professionally and otherwise to support them. Asbury helps them with their everyday needs, medical needs, but also more importantly they help them with their emotional needs and respond on a very human level, with a lot of compassion. What we have been through has not been easy, but if you find yourself in a similar position I would tell you to speak with a representative from Asbury Village because I can not think of another place that would have treated my family with the level of kindness and understanding that they have.
