I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Maplewood Place was fully renovated about 2 years ago. The apartments, common areas and dining room are beautiful and very inviting. My 87-year-old mother was very apprehensive about assisted living but no longer had the ability to live independently. Maplewood Place became “home” in about a week thanks to the staff and residents. The “community” (both the people and infrastructure) made the transition here easy and her transformation with joy, peace and happiness nearly seamless. From the aides to housekeeping to the dining room staff, activities director, front desk, wellness care to management - ALL have been professional, kind, caring and welcoming every hour of every day. The TEAM is focused on making every resident feel at home with happiness and joy. Every aspect of this community is covered to the smallest detail - cleanliness, food, activities, apartments and level of assistance required. The infrastructure is beautiful and inviting from the lobby to dining room to common areas.

I visited this facility

We visited Holiday Maplewood Place and the facilities were definitely topnotch. The people were absolutely fantastic when we were going through the process. We saw the room, the dining, the recreation sort of areas that they would have, and spoke to the director. It was just a really beautiful facility and the people were very nice and accommodating. The place was absolutely spotless, and for someone that was in my mother's situation, the layout of the rooms would have given her a feeling of independence inside her dwelling, so she wouldn't feel obligated to constantly call and ask for assistance. It was a studio place that had a bathroom in it and a living space. It was big enough for her to live, but also small enough so she didn't have to travel long distances to get to any primary need. We only met the director and he was very, very accommodating. He showed us whatever we wanted to see, and we actually were able to give him some insight on the building since it was the place that I went to junior high. So, I actually described what the building looked like before it became an assisted living place. We had a great conversation that way too, and he continues to try to find financial avenues for us if it's something we desperately needed.

I visited this facility

I toured Holiday Maplewood Place. I liked the proximity to a lot of places like fitness clubs, restaurants, and stores. I can walk to pretty much everything I need to. It's very nice and very old style. It used to be a high school, so I can see how it used to be a bunch of classrooms there. It has a nice, unique, rather than a modern character to it. It's got an old, pleasant character to it. The guy during the tour was very courteous. He said that they were having a brief COVID outbreak there, so everybody was in masks, and so a lot of the residents were not out there in the open. I didn't get to meet any residents there, but it was only because they had the COVID situation. He took me to all the places that I wanted to see and all the different room types. He answered all my questions about what I needed to do if I was to become ill later and not be able to act on my own because I didn't have any relatives left. It's very clean and well-kept. The landscaping was very nice. The parking lot was very accessible. They talked about how if you wanted to go to the doctor, on certain days they could take you there. They have transportation. They work it out with everybody else. He said that there are three meals a day and that all the utilities are paid for.

The staff at Holiday Maplewood Place was very friendly, very helpful, and very informative. It wasn't just the right fit for my mother. That's the only reason why we didn't go. The rooms were spacious, bright, and very clean. We looked at a studio and a one-bedroom. The dining area was very nice, but it's under renovation. It will be beautiful when it's done.

We went to Atria Maplewood Place. We had lunch, and they gave us a tour. They were very nice. It felt spacious. I think it had been renovated. It used to be a school, so they had nice, big, high ceilings. You didn't feel cooped up at all. It felt open. They were extremely nice. Between the people I talked to on the phone and the person that gave me the tour, they were very knowledgeable. I cannot say enough nice things about them. They were great. They're in the midst of doing renovations over in the dining room. I think it'll be finished by early fall. It was nice and open. It certainly was good service, and they were very nice. They showed us a list of activities. As a matter of fact, my husband almost went with them because he loves to gamble, and they were arranging a trip to Twin Rivers. He thought that was great. They give you a menu, and they also post it in the elevator. My husband loves fruits, vegetables, salads, and things like that, but I didn't see a lot of that. It looked like the food was good, and everybody seemed happy with it. The bathroom was well set up. It had been recently renovated for the apartment that he was going to stay in. They would provide a TV, and the linens.

We visited Atria Maplewood Place for my mom. It was a more urban setting than the place we ended up choosing. The rooms were smaller, and the windows were huge, so you wouldn't have privacy. There were a lot of smokers, and my mom doesn't like smokers. Overall, it would be a good fit for someone else.

We visited Atria Maplewood Place for my father. We had an appointment there with the director of admissions, and she gave us a tour of the building, the dining area, and the rooms. It was very nice and the tour was very well done. They were going through a remodel, so they were remodeling the units that were sort of studio units. I saw two apartment units, one was a little larger than the other. And I was very impressed by the size of the studio because I thought it would just basically be a little living room with a kitchen all in one room, but it was quite large with a little bit of privacy. The bedrooms felt like it was going to be private. They were very nice, very well done, very airy, lots of light, lots of sunshine, and very clean. She showed us the hair salon that they're going to start, that's very nice, and the dining area is beautiful. They are also going to renew that or renovate that area so it's going to be very, very nice and it's very clean. I saw a couple of the clients that live there and they seem happy, there was a couple of them sitting outside on the porch. The admissions director was very nice and very informative about every question I had. They even gave us an apple pie to take home at the end of the tour, so they were very nice. I was very impressed with the facility. Some of the hallways were a little old-looking and kind of outdated, but with the renovations, I think it's going to be looking beautiful. The chef had just baked an apple pie for lunch, and she sent us home with an apple pie. It was very good, my father and I enjoyed that apple pie for a few days.

Atria Maplewood Place is very clean, it's got plenty of room and large hallways. The room that we visited was ample, it was a good size and it had all the facilities my friend would need. I visited the dining room and it looked well kept up and well cared for. The staff was very nice. They addressed all the questions that I have and they gave me all the information that I needed on my departure. They evaluated my friend and determined that they wouldn't be able to accommodate her needs. I saw some of the patients outside, some were gathering for a bingo activity, and it just seemed like it was a very well-run facility. It wasn't cramped and the hallways are big enough to accommodate anyone in wheelchairs. It seemed like a nice place.

I visited this facility

I almost got my friend into Atria Maplewood Place, but she just didn't want to go. The tour was very nice. The people were very good. It was a good experience. They showed us a one-bedroom and a studio. They went over pretty much everything with us, and they showed us different things inside the place. It was a very good experience. I would highly recommend someone to go there. As far as pricing, they are very reasonable if you meet certain criteria, and they have these special programs. I could have gotten my friend in there for $2550. They are now more focused on helping people stay longer, instead of taking an "if you don't have the money, you have to go" approach. I was impressed with that program. My friend could stay there comfortably and live there for fifteen years, which would put her into her nineties. If it were me, that's what I would look at. They were very accommodating. I think things have changed over there quite a bit, and they are doing remodeling, too, but they haven't done it yet because of COVID. My friend didn't want to go there because she felt it was too big and that she would get lost. However, they even were willing to give her a studio on the first floor next to the elevator, so that she would not have to go walking around to get to her place. The elevator would take her right up to the dining area and would bring her right back down to the bottom floor, but still she didn't want to go there. The staff was very good. I didn't get to meet the manager, but I spoke to him on the phone. He was a very nice man. The first time I called, he gave me all the information, and it was very helpful. He followed up with me many times, like if there was anything that he could help me with if my friend changed her mind, and they were even willing to give her one month free. Once the place is renovated and brought back up to speed, it will be amazing. They also have field trips, and they have all kinds of stuff, so I think it is a great place.

Provider Response

Hello Grace, Thank you for visiting with us, and please let us know if you'd like to take another tour in the future. It was our pleasure to show you around.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My friend is in Atria Maplewood Place in Malden. The great thing about it is -- and this was very critical when I was making the final decision -- the demographics of the facility. I looked at ten facilities. The demographics for all of them were that the population average age was approximately eighty-five, and the percentage of females to males was between 65 and 70 percent to approximately 30 percent. For twenty-five-year-olds, that would be great, but my friend is seventy years old, and we really wanted to have a facility with a demographic that is a lot closer to his age. In Atria, the demographics are reversed. Instead of a majority of females, they have a majority of males. There are also a lot of veterans living in this facility. Somewhere between 30 and 40 percent of male residents are veterans. So those things made a huge difference and weighed heavily as we made the decision of where to put him. He says the food is good currently, and I think it's high quality. The staff is pretty good. They're open and responsive to my calls and e-mails. The Atria nationwide, I guess, has gone from a lanyard-type assist button you wear on your neck to a watch-type. With it, there's two-way communication and when they're monitoring, they would know if there's a sudden fall or something like that. The electronics are capable of that, and I'm very impressed. The facility happens to be a repurposed elementary or a junior-high school. It's a great facility. I was actually able to go in but didn't go beyond the entryway because of COVID. I did a video tour and had the occasion to be in the lobby area, and it looks very impressive. We haven't been able to experience the full capability of the facility because of COVID. One of the things that was impressive for me prior to COVID is that, having so many male residents, they would do a lot of things like going into baseball games or to a Celtics game. There were a lot of offsite trips and part-day trips, just ways to get out of the facility. Inside the facility they have exercise and different things going on, but most of that is mostly shut down because of COVID.

We toured all of Atria Maplewood Place. We liked the security, the way the facility was maintained, the cleanliness of the facility, and the location (because it's in the town that I live in). The appearance was fine. The person during the tour and the nurse on-staff were very knowledgeable. They're very nice people to deal with. It felt homey because they had a big lobby area with comfortable chairs and music playing. It wasn't institutional, and it didn't have that nursing home smell to it.

Atria Maplewood Place was OK, but we decided that we didn't belong there. I was very impressed with it. It was very nice, except it was in a neighborhood that is not a good one, like there are drugs and things like that at night. We had pie and coffee and it was fine. I liked everything except the people sitting outside, which was very depressing. We met a few of the staff and they were fine.

Atria Maplewood was quite nice as well. I really liked it; it probably would have been my third choice. I did go and tour the dementia unit, and I can't say that I got a very exact feeling of the rooms and how the residents were. I was kind of pushed in there; I was shown the dining room and the common room, and then we left. I actually did say, "Oh yup, alright I will bring my mom here." I had it set up actually. This was going to be my first choice, and then by the afternoon, I got another phone call, and they said, "Oops, sorry. He made a mistake. He shouldn't have told you that. We don't have any room available." So it was very disappointing, and that is why it didn't happen. I don't like being disappointed, and I think they should make sure that they give out the right information.

I looked at Atria. It was beautiful. It seemed to be run very well. The rooms were beautiful and very clean. They had everything. As a matter of when they were showing me around, people were down at the exercise class and yoga class. They had a little bit of everything there. It is a very well taken care of place.

We're done with assisted living. We had a very bad experience. My mother went into Atria and ended up getting put on all kinds of medication. She was left in the toilet 5 hours at a time. She fell twice, split her head, and split her nose open. It was horrible. My mother was completely out of it, had a UTI, almost died, yet they would raise the rent because she's now a level 2. That's going to be an extra $1500 a month, when they actually made her sick. They got her off all the meds, and now, she's like 30 years younger. The VA has her in an independent living and have people coming in to help instead.

Atria Maplewood was very similar to the place where my mother is at, but it’s just the feeling. I had better feeling about the other facility. I liked Atria a lot. The staff was great there. They give me all the information I needed. They were just so nice. It was a beautiful place. It’s almost like a gorgeous mansion. I like their units. There was just a lot I like about it. It gave me a good impression.

Atria Maplewood Place was pretty new and was very beautifully set up. The facility was very clean. The staff was very professional. The people were very nice. They seemed to have a lot of activities going on. They showed us the dining room and an area where people could cook if they wanted to. They had a doctor on call. However, I thought the price was high. Their studio was $4,700m, which looked like a large closet with a tiny bathroom, a shower and a tiny kitchenette. A one-bedroom is $,6,600 and the cost was prohibit of meals.

Provider Response

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed our beautiful community. Atria prides itself on maintaining high standards of service. I am concerned over the confusion regarding our rates because all monthly rates include at least two dining experiences per day. I encourage you to reach out so that we can answer any questions you may have regarding our rates and services included therein. I am a friend or relative of a resident

The assisted living areas of this facility were lovely, but the Alzheimer's unit (called "Life Guidance") was absolutely WONDERFUL! My mother was one of 10 residents, who were not just well-cared for, but LOVED by the staff. Every time I went to visit, and to one of the special holiday events, I could see the love in the eyes of the staff, and hear it in their voices, and saw it in their touch. My mother was very happy there for the last few years of her life. And because she was happy, so was I.

I visited this facility

I recently visited two residents at Atria Maplewood Assisted living facility. In general, I thought Atria Maplewood Assisted living facility is excellent. The grounds of the facility are well kept. The center is located on a main road in Malden, MA and is easily accessible by car. There is a large parking lot available for visitors to use. Upon walking into assisted living facility you are greeted warmly by the receptionist and the smell of fresh baked cookies. There was also coffee, juice, and water available with the cookies at the front entrance. There is a library and several small sitting areas both with and without TV's not far from the entrance. Every staff member we encountered was very friendly. From the interactions I observed it is clear that the residents know all the staff members and feel very comfortable with them. I also noticed that the facility staff demonstrated patience and had developed a genuine caring relationship with all residents but in particular a woman who has dementia and was relatively new. There seemed to be endless amounts of common areas in the facility. There is a lovely patio area in between the buildings, picture a courtyard. The dining room is enormous but very comfortable, as residents sit in tables of 4 to eat meals. There is also a separate dining area that can be utilized for special events. The entire facility has a homey, spacious, and comfortable feel. The residents' studio rooms are large and did not feel cramped at all. In the studio there was a large walk-in closet. There are stove tops and a good size refrigerator to use. The one-bedroom apartments are equally as nice but with more room. Overall, Atria Maplewood Assisted living facility is a wonderful place. I would recommend it to seniors who are looking to maintain their independence.
