We decided that the time was right for my parents to go to Assisted Living, and fortunately, we found several facilities in our area. Most places we saw looked nice and seemed to have good care, but when we went to Sunrise of Cary, we immediately noticed a higher overall standard. The building is wonderfully decorated and puts us at ease when we enter the lobby. The rooms are well-designed and spacious and capture a lot of natural light (very cheery). The people living there looked happy and were joking around with the staff. Several activities took place when we visited, and the gym was full of people doing exercises. When you meet the activities leader and the therapy manager, you can tell they are pros. The activities are about “resident engagement,” the therapy manager is determined to get people to move and stay moving at a high level. Very happy with the choice to come here, 10/10.

My wife moved into Sunrise of Cary. We like the location and the quality of the program. The staff is well trained, very competent, and friendly. They have a wide variety of menu items, usually a choice at each meal of either a standard meal or a lighter meal. The food is well prepared and tasty. They have a very good schedule of activities and a very good activity director.

The apartments at Sunrise of Cary were clean and nice. The memory care unit we saw would have been a problem with us because there was a step to the shower so they would have ended up having to take mom across the way, and it just wasn't going to work out. Other than that, they have activities like painting, bingo, music, and worship services. The building was nice. They have different areas you could sit in if you wanted to be quiet or in a large group.

I visited this facility

Sunrise of Cary was a larger facility. They seemed to have a lot more activities going on and I felt they had a wider range to offer to me because there were like 33 residents from memory care. Price-wise, they were about the same as the others. The person that gave the tour was very informative and very engaging in trying to provide a solution. They seemed to have more options on a room setup, but on the downside, they only had two small patio areas.

My visit to Sunrise of Cary was very good. The lady was very nice and took me around to see a lot of things. My biggest problem with it was it was too far away from where my daughter lives. They were having a Halloween party, and they had a lot of people out and moving around and eating things, so I was having fun. The rooms were nice, they're set up, right for a big wheelchair. I saw the menu, and it looked fine. They had a library, a grand piano or baby grand, and I saw the dining hall. It looked and smelled clean enough, and from what I can see, it was maintained ok. It is an older facility, so it seemed like things were smaller. It didn't feel old, but I could tell it was older.

My grandmother stayed at Sunrise of Cary. The staff was amazing, especially the senior-level staff. They were very easy to work with and very accommodating. The place was beautiful. She had a nice room with a pretty view with a birdfeeder and all that. It was a great place for respite care. They had tons of activities. She really couldn't leave her room at the time. She didn't participate in activities. They tried to get her to do things, but she wasn't able to do much. She couldn't swallow whole foods. They were making her lots of different soups and things that were easy to swallow, so that was really nice that they could make her something for each meal that was a little different from what she could swallow. I saw other facilities that were newer and a little fancier, but I thought it was a great choice for us at the time. It's a little bit older, but it's still very nice.

I liked the layout better at Sunrise of Cary than others. There were more public spaces, like little lobby corners where people could gather. However, the apartments were smaller also, Cary is a bit more expensive. The staff seemed to be going out of their way help residents and also were very friendly and hospitable to me. I saw an activity room, a kitchen area, some gardens, a physical therapy room, and the dining room. It seemed to be well maintained and clean.

I toured Sunrise of Cary. Their memory care was way too expensive and I feel like there wasn't enough supervision. The room that my sister was going to be in, was going to be down and around a corner and I didn't see where the nurse's station was on that floor. The rooms were small and the rug was filthy. They put in new carpeting, but it just didn't seem homey to me. Their assisted living seemed fine, though, and the person who did the tour was great, but the staff members (the people working with the residents) didn't interact with me at all.

We toured Sunrise of Cary for my father. It was a very nice place. The staff were exceedingly friendly. You could see them having a good time with the residents. They were joking around and having a good time, so there's a good rapport. Most of all, we liked the staff. They seem really, really good, very nice, and very genuine. The place was very comforting. We saw the game room. They have some big front porches to enjoy, and we got to look at those. We saw the dining room and two different living spaces. We also saw the general grounds around the building. They had a cafe, too.

I visited this facility

Sunrise of Cary was very grand and beautiful. We visited on a Saturday, so there wasn't a lot of activity going on. I saw both the assisted living and memory care section of the facility, and the memory care side was very, very well thought out and planned out regarding the things they offered. The person who gave us the tour was very helpful too. My only comment was I had to call them today because they did not have a packet with the pricing and everything available to give me, and they were going to e-mail it to me but it didn't come. Hopefully, I'm going to get that soon, but she did show us around and was very thorough in describing what they offer. We were in the elevator at some point when the person who was taking orders for dinner told us the menu for the day, and it was very nice. It looked very good. We didn't sample any food, but it was varied and not institutional-type food. In the memory care, they have what they called "reminiscence stations" where there's a wedding-day area and they can dress up, put their hats on, and just reminisce about the past -- your wedding day or whatever. There's one station that was in an office, and there was a military one. They were set up as conversation starters and to promote what they remember better than immediate memory. They also have a library. There was a small group of residents playing bingo, another group watching sing-along videos, and a finger game going on in the memory care.

Sunrise of Cary was very nice, but we didn’t like that it was two floors; the memory care was on the second floor, and there’s an elevator involved. The living atmosphere was nice, and it had decent size rooms. Outside the rooms, they placed something on the door or outside to remind the residents that that’s their room; pictures, or something meaningful to them. The staff seemed fine, They plan each month on the board for the things they do each day, and it looked like there were activities to do each day. The rooms inside were very nice, with a bed, dresser, chair, or whatever was needed. They appeared clean, and the dining room was set up very nicely with lots of tables where groups can gather, lovely place settings, and looked very cheerful. They had different areas to gather and sit, whether it be TV, reading, juice, or snack bar. They had a hairdresser who comes in once a week as well as doctors who come in. They can plan a visit, speak to as many people as they can, and get a feel for the place.

The tour person at Sunrise of Cary was really nice. It's a beautiful facility, but you have to furnish the rooms yourself. They went out of their way to make their residents feel comfortable, not like they were in an assisted living, but still youthful and doing youthful things. There was music going on when I was there. The dining area looked really nice. There was a salon and an outdoor courtyard area.

I didn't like Sunrise of Cary at all. The staff who accommodated me was fine and educated, but she was the one who blew it, too. The first thing I saw when I came in was a patient there with his head hanging real low who asked for assistance, and the person who was giving me the tour said he'll be fine. It's unprofessional and I'm very unhappy with them. The place itself looked nice but I didn't like it after being disappointed when seeing that they are uncaring. I saw the patient that way a second time and nobody had done anything.

This community is beautiful on the outside. They have some decent staff but the turnover rate is ridiculous. As long as my loved one was there, changes in administration occurred three times within four years. The middle staff turnover was just as bad. I constantly saw my father in disheveled clothing with his hair not combed or his teeth brushed. The poor girls on the floor ran around like crazy because they were always understaffed. Every year the pricing went up and the quality of care went down. I would look somewhere else. Unfortunately I did not have POA to make that decision

Sunrise of Cary was pretty similar to every other large institutional facility, and I concluded that we would rather try residential care homes after I visited there. We had a nice tour. My sister was with me, and we actually knew the manager there. He was honest with us, and he said, “Yeah, we are pretty similar to all the other large homes.” They had nice facilities but subject to how much help the state regulations require. It is one helper for every 7 or more residents as opposed to 3 in residential care homes. That is a big difference and a good difference with my mom. For a big place, the room was nice; it was expensive though. It was more expensive than where she had been and more expensive than where she is now.

I am a friend or relative of resident

I'm a family member of one of the residents in this facility. We have been with Sunrise of Cary for a couple years now and we understand that this facility has had its up and down. But there have been a few things we noticed recently that has worried us. The management hasn't been as friendly as they usually are, (A lot of new faces that have been quite distant) and the food quality has been worse. The thing that I have noticed which has really been bothering me is when I go see my mother after-work, I see the same lady that helps my mother with going to the restroom and showers serving her food. The care givers I deal with in the afternoon are really sweet and are hard workers. I just find it a little unsanitary to be having the care givers working in the kitchen, when in the mornings they have individuals who specifically work in the kitchen.

Sunrise of Cary was the first one that I went to, so I didn't know anything. It was very clean -- and they were all basically the same when it came to that -- but the lady taking me around, I didn't get a warm feeling from her. I didn't see any of the residents smiling; they were just kind of there. There was an interaction with the lady that was taking me around with one of the residents, and the resident was probably having a bad day or I didn't know what was going on, but I just didn't like the way she talked to her, so that was it. I took them off the list right away. The rooms were nice and larger, and he could take his dog, but because of her, I wasn't going to go back. It could have been that she was just having a bad day, and it could be just that one thing, but like I said, they only got one shot. I didn't go back.

We have seen this community go downhill ..there are chronic turnover problems - both with upper mgt and hands on caregivers. Gone are the days where the residents know the ED and the Coordinators (or even recognize their faces). The food is terrible, even though they've changed "chefs" - I've tasted it myself and I'm not that picky, but it's just plain bad. The activities are so dumbed down that its embarrassing. For the amt of money that we spend, it is shocking the activities budget is so pitiful...isn't keeping our loved one happy and involved a huge part of why they're there?? Their parties used to be so fun and so crowded with lots of family members. Now they are boring, no one attends (b/c their outreach efforts are very ineffective) and then they change the start time the day of the event and no one is notified! You used to walk in and just feel the positive energy, warm welcomes, engaged employees - now it seems everyone is in their office and residents are just sitting around - and that is one depressing picture. There is a new ED (been so many we've lost count) so we are HOPEFUL there will be change - but not banking on it :/

While Sunrise offers a beautiful, clean facility, the staff has turned over again and again since my family member moved in. Many employees are disgruntled and gossip about their complaints with residents, which distresses those who make Sunrise their home. The dining room fare is inconsistent, and the dining room is so crowded, residents require assistance squeezing into seats. Sunrise is currently looking for its third Executive Director in less than two years. My family is currently looking for a new facility for our loved one.

My sister-in-law is in Sunrise. She has been there since last September. She has a room by herself with a bed in it, a nice bed, and a joint bathroom with somebody else. It is a new facility, very nice -- a very beautiful facility. It's 3 floors and they have a downstairs. She lives in a nice apartment upstairs on the second floor, and on the third floor, they have dementia and Alzheimer's people. The staff is very nice people, very friendly, and very helpful. They have all kinds of things there. There's bingo. They come together, and some sit in chairs, some in wheelchairs, and then they show some movies. They have all kinds of entertainment there. I've seen my sister-in-law eating there, and they have pretty good food.

My mother lived at this facility from Dec 18, 2013 through February 14, 2013. During this time she suffered from two UTI's that were not diagnosed for at least 5 days, many days where her medication was not given because she refused, an incompetent doctor making house calls whose only solution was to continually increase medications to the point she ended in the hospital. I received no phone calls from the doctor to inform of medication changes, I did not receive a phone call from the facility until 5 days after she had not taken her medication. The situation escalated to the point my mother spent 10 days in psychiatric ward to cleanse her body of all the medications given to her. For a facility that claims to have an "elite alzheimer's unit" they were far from competent in being able to administer medication and to perform daily cleaning to prevent UTI infections. Fortunately she is no longer at the facility and is in a much safer place. I would not recommend this facility to anyone.

My visit at Sunrise of Cary was very good. All facilities under this company are basically the same looking. They have the staircases and everything when you come in. They do have activities and periodically they would even have little talks, music or whatever and residents can participate in them. However, when I went in this facility, a lot of their residents were just sitting in their chairs. Also at the time of my visit there, my sister was in DC, and I was telling a lady staff there about her. She said that they would have to have their sister company in that area evaluate what level of medical care my sister would need. Nevertheless, I would recommend Sunrise of Cary to others.

My parents lived there for 2 years and it was a traumatic experience for the entire family. What you see is a beautiful facility, but the management was terrible and the caretakers were untrained. There are many occasions to tell about, once when my mother's oxygen tube came unhooked from the machine in the middle of the night, she pulled the call bell and no one ever came. She had to crawl out of bed on her hands and knees to hook her oxygen back up. (2nd floor). Care in the memory care was even worse. There was no quality programing for the residents. Most of the time they sat around in the main room with one caretaker who would yell sit down every time a resident went to leave. My family visited every day trying to get the best help for my parents and it was still inadequate. The people that didn't have any one visiting was really sad. I watched people beg to be changed or go to the bathroom only to be told repeatedly that they would have to wait. We paid to have Sunrise administer medication, but on many occasions it was not given. We know this because we had to hire outside caregivers to come in and provide care.

My mom is a resident of Sunrise of Cary. Due to her alzheimers, she resides in the memory care unit, (3rd fl) I have been to many facilities, and none of them even come close to Sunrise. Being there almost every day I see exactly what goes on. The place is always clean and fresh smelling. The staff is so hard working, compassionate, and loving. But most of all, my family has peace of mind. My mom is always clean, well fed, and happy, Because of her disease, she can be difficult at times, but the staff knows just how to deal with her in the most compassionate way. There is absolutely no comparison to other facilities. On behalf of my entire family, Thank you so much.

Sunrise of Cary has been an excellent facility for my mother who has dementia. The facility feels like home. There is something always going on and it feels good when you walk in because you experience the sense of community. The staff has been exceptional in communicating with me on a regular basis. The staff is caring, passionate, and go out of their way to meet my mother's individual physical, mental, and emotional needs. They make sure that she is comfortable and place preserving her dignity and respect as a priority. As a social worker myself, I was looking for a facility for my mother where she could experience the best quality of life possible. Sunrise of Cary has been able to provide that for her.

Sunrise of Cary is an excellent community. While they had some management changes in the past, they finally got it right. The leadership team is stellar and there is longevity in many of the leaders. The care team has been fantastic since their opening. I have witnessed the team go above and beyond for their residents in every way possible. This is truely the best senior living around!

Sunrise is a nice place, but only in comparison to other facilities I have been to. The staff is friendly, and rooms are private. The facility is relatively new, but this is still an assisted living facility not a five star hotel. When you walk down the halls you can still smell urine just like every other facility I have been to. The food is not delicious but my grandparents don't seem to mind, they don't eat much anyway. The residents seem happy and are encouraged to participate in various activities such as a book club, exercise club, Wii bowling, and movie night. The cost of living there is very expensive with their costs for two people running well into the six figures, but I am not familiar with the pricing of other facilities. One annoyance is the locked doors after nine PM, but they are just trying to keep the residents safe which I can certainly appreciate. There is free popcorn in the lobby all day long, and for the most part any resident who can remember the exit code is free to come and go as they please.

The staff who work, like nursing assistants and their supervisors, are wonderful at this facility. However, management has been poor, and the Sunrise Corporation has run into financial problems over the last couple of years. They are charging customers extra charges for basic responsibilities of an assisted living facility, like performing services for incontinence, "medication administration," and even a utility surcharge fee. You may want to compare to other facilities in the area because I do not think that this facility is competitive. It is not a good value for the money.
