I am a friend or relative of a resident
I was very apprehensive about having my grandpa join any sort of retirement community; the news rarely says anything good about them. However this place was clean, well kept and well managed. The staff were friendly and helpful, and according to my grandpa, the other residents were welcoming and kind. He was happy there, and I'm glad that he was in a place where he had trained staff around in case he needed medical assistance.

The goal of care in a nursing home is to help individuals meet their daily physical, medical, social, and psychological needs in which I feel is met by all.Nursing Home residents not only receive assistance with all activities of daily living but also can receive specialized care for more advanced health issues such as: Assistance with complex medications, Injections or IV's, Wound Care, Incontinence, Transfer assistance - mobility, Catheters, Ventilator, Rehabilitation and more.Their food is above standard and close to town where many other options await. Many good area restaurants offer fresh seafood as well as sophisticated menus. As you drive along the town's roads, your eyes will be treated to competing views - the ocean's pounding surf, fishing vessels, and large and beautiful homes in the quiet surrounding of Astoria.
I remember the feeling I got when I first pulled into the parking lot of this facility was that it looked like a hospital or institution. Since then I have visited the facility many times and that initial feeling I had has never changed. The landscape and grounds were are very bland and does not look like a fun place for residents to enjoy being outside. Inside of the facility is very institutional-like as well, everything just seems so hard and cold from the floor to ceiling.
The residents though seem to be happy and they always tell me that they love the staff members. I have seen the staff treat the residents with very friendly and loving care and I have never seen anything as far as the quality of care that has caused me any concern.
There are also daily activities, common areas with different things for the residents to do, and other opportunities for the residents to keep busy. They also frequently have parties, live entertainment, and they also go on fun outings. So they do a lot with the residents in helping to keep them entertained and active. I never see a lot of residents aimlessly wandering around the facility because they're bored, sure it happens sometimes, but that's common - even in facilities that have activities scheduled all day long everyday.
I think that the staff should make the interior and exterior more welcoming and nice for the residents, I wish the residents had more things that they could do out side, like gardens and flowers to tend to, paths to walk on, nicer sitting areas, things like that. But on the other hand, that stuff is all for appearance and what really counts is that the quality of care is outstanding.
