We would like to move my mom in with us, but she lives in Ohio and we live in LA.  She hates LA!  Her brothers and sisters live within 10 minutes of her in Ohio.  However, the thing she hates more than living in LA is living alone.  We have told her she can move here whenever she wants to, but one of the things of concern is that she has several doctors and a dentist that she likes where she is.  They are located very close by where she lives, and she doesn't seem to have any trouble getting appointments on a regular basis.  She is taking about 8 different medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, neuropathy, cholesterol, etc.  Has anyone had any experience with finding doctors in a big city like LA?  Mom has Medicare and a supplemental insurance - does anyone have any experience with having doctors accept insurance from out of state?  I'd greatly appreciate hearing any input, caveats, etc.

I moved my mom in with us Sept. 2006, not only cross country but out of the country. We have lived in Austria for 21 years and our livelihood is here, as well as 2 of our 3 adult kids. So when mom went totally blind and couldn't care for herself we asked her if she would consider moving to Europe. We went step by step...first a plane ticket...then began the residency visa issues which took many months. Eventually it all came together, she was granted residency, she pays for her social insurance and we've found the doctors she needs. Even when she suffered a fractured disc the hospitalization and surgery all worked out beautifully. Mom speaks no German and is very hard of hearing and handled the hospital stay like a trooper. All this to say, if this is what is supposed to be, it will all work out! Still, being a full time caregiver is far more difficult than I expected but we are adjusting and remaining optimistic.

Before moving in with us, mom lived in Seal Beach, Leisure World. There were many helpful doctors there, and mom also had Medicare and supplemental insurance....it all worked out fine. I can't imagine that moving cross country would have any effect on her coverage.

All the best to you!
