You have the best situation! My husband and I were just talking in a "wouldn't it be so fantastic one day if" type of way about buying a house with a separate living quarters for my mom. Something that would give her independence and privacy while still be right with us. I'm so happy something like that has worked out well for you!

We moved my mom (75) in a year ago. We had the resources to build out the basement as a stand alone apartment. Living space, bedroom, bath and kitchen. We built a patio outside the entrance so she has her own living space. It has been an adjustment but it really is working out very well. We all have our own space and can see each other as much as a little as needed or wanted. However, we are here for doctors appointments etc. Hope this helps.

It's more a joke than anything, I know, but my mother is always teasing that we're going to have to fix up our back room into MIL quarters so when she's too old to take care of herself, she can move in there.

Do I gotta?

All kidding aside, how does one handle that situation - where you value your privacy and your own home and don't wish to have someone else living there?
