Is a warehouse membership (Costco, Sam's, etc) worth it for personal care items?

What's the consensus on this? Is the price of a warehouse membership worth the discount you get on personal care items like Depends, OTC drugs/vitamins/supplements, prescription drugs, and other things? In our area, both Sam's and Costco are about $50 per year.

If you do have a membership, what type of savings are you getting? What are your favorite products?

Thanks!

My Mom lives in an assisted living facility in another state, so I don't purchase items for her at Costco. However, my wife and I shop there all the time for our personal needs and find it well worth the membership fee. In fact, the Costco near us has the cheapest gas in town by about 5 cents per gallon. Since we each fill up our tanks about once a week, that savings alone more than pays for the membership cost. Add to that the savings on everything else (we get all our cleaning items, paper goods, numerous food items, and even wine there) and the savings are substantial. I'm sure that if you joined and also purchased your personal care items there, you'd save that much more. Their own Kirkland brand of products is even cheaper than the discounted brand names they carry, and we've found them to be of similar quality. However, having said all that, if you ONLY purchased personal care items, I'm not sure that would be enough to warrant the membership fee. You'd have to do the math yourself. Good luck!

Costco has an "Executive" membership option that costs a bit more, but you get a check back once a year, based on the amount you spend. Some of their services are exempt, but if you purchase items frequently or big ticket items, it will pay for itselft over the year. I find that prescripton meds are less expensive than Wal-Mart, and try to find the deals based on purchasing in bulk. Some items are much less expensive, and if you can divide and shelve/freeze foodstuffs, it will definitely save $$.
Another good place to look for some personal care items such as depends, non-disposable chux (bed protectors) is at your local thrift stores such as Salvation Army or Value Village. I have found brand new and unopened Depends at Value Village for a very cheap price. They usually also have canes, and occas wheeled walkers.

Our Sam's Club is 40 miles away (and there is not a Costco anywhere around here..) but I do find that I esp save a bunch on mom's 'depends' and I get the Member's Mark brand - which seem to be much more comfortable than Depends - box of 60 is around $35. Other OTC meds are much cheaper than WalMart or CVS - and I love the food! FRESH! I do like buying in bulk and filling the freezer. Mom lives with us & has Alzheimer's (or moderate to severe dementia - makes life interesting!)
