Just wondering if anyone has any home remedies for arthritis? Did they work and how well?

Thanks!

My grandmother suffered from arthritis and one of the ways she got some relief was through dietary changes. For example, she reduced the amount of red meat in her diet and increased her consumption of fish, especially salmon and her all-time favorite, tuna. These kinds of oily, cold water fish are high in fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties.

Has anyone tried water therapy? I don't know if it's technically a home remedy, but it looks like the Arthritis Foundation support it. Read this tip for more information.

I do know that some light exercise, especially on the affected joints, is recommended. You may need to consult a physical therapist to learn them.

I hope that helps.

A friend at work uses omega 3 fish oil for her arthritis. As the months have gone by her joints are visibly smaller. And the best part is that she has had a huge reduction in pain. Apparently, the higher the concentration and milligrams, the better.

Eating gelatin every day can help lubricate the joints. My mother takes gelatin dissolved in water but I don't know the quantities.

There is also Physical Therapy. If someone in the family can go in for a few sessions and learn how to help, that is good.

My grandmother was given a prescription for P.T. last year but has refused to do it, and has gone downhill.

I am a massage therapist, and have studied aromatherapy for years.  I have developed a remedy that has been working for my freinds and family.  It constists of thereaputic grade essential oils. Massage will help, if you cannot afford it, just keep looking, you will find a therapist that is benevolent enough to make it affordable for you.  You can also try massage schools in your area, there clinics are inexpensive, once you find a student you like, they may stick with you after they graduate, and keep you at an inexpensive rate.

THe blend of oils I use is Lavender -(you dont have to buy the most expensive, but dont get the cheapest either) Ginger, peppermint, juniperberry, marjorham... It is difficult to find all these in a random place I order mine online, the bottles and whatnot can get expensive, but it is worth it!!  Maybe you can find an aromatherapist in your area that will have something similar that can help.  I would be glad to make some, send it, dont know if that is appropriate in this areana???

Many alternative medicines/modalities will have a positive effect on arthrities, one of the Dr's I used to work with said eat a raw food diet and it will help... Cant quite go that far, just eat lots of veggies.  The point here is to balance ph in the body so you have more alkaline instead of acid. Veggies, raw foods, create more alkaline, meat, coffee, sugar all create acid..

Good luck....

Hello it s me the old chap who survived stomach cancer without any  medicine or treatment, well I had arthritis 25 years ago. My docter told me it was his specialty but his treatment upset my stomach,so looked for alternatives and found that my diet was to blam, so no red meat no sugar every morning I would take a spoonful cod liver oil mixed it with orange juice or milk mix it until until it forms little bubbles andthen take it on a empty stomach every morning:I did and now at near eighty I am as fit as a flea ,but my wife didnt like cod liver oil so she followed the docters advise. Now she is in a wheelchair she has two useless new knee joints, because when they replaced her knee joints.they managed to prolapse three disks in her back during the operation they also sparked off diabetes. So as my retired Dentists Doctor son ,told him"Dad try not to become a patient"remember Doctersare trained in diagnosing but can only give offical medication  not what is best for you.Their hands are tied.thinking is not allowed.sorry I have to go for my run round the block now!I had 18 holes of golf this morning.

One thing you can do to make life easier for a family member with arthritis is to buy the right shoes. This isn't exactly a home remedy, but we all need good shoes, right? Well, laces can be really tricky and time-consuming for someone with arthritis. Think about velcro as an alternative. For example, lots of Skechers have velcro and come in cute styles. My Dad has arthritis so laces are doable, but time-consuming. We got some Skechers and he liked them so much, we went back and got another pair a few weeks later. And no, I don't work for the company!

My mother took KNOX GELITAN for years. You can buy at the store and she would disolve 1 package in 8oz. glass and then drink.

Another known remedy for Artthritis are tart cherries.  These cherries are a strong natural anti inflamatory.  Try a product called Cherry Pharm which is a cherry juice.

I think it is important to know what kind of arthritis you are dealing with.

I am a long-distance runner, a 53 yr. old woman, 5'2" and weigh 110lbs.  I experienced a fall while training for the 2009 Walt Disney World Marathon.  I finished the marathon, but during a follow-up medical exam was diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

I have always used ice bath soaks for my knees, taken vitamins and began taking Osteo Bi-flex.  I just completed a series of 3 shots in each knee of Synvisc (Hyaloronic Acid)  in order to get back to training for races that I have coming up Fall 2009.  Has anyone else tried this?  I am one week past my last set of shots and I have only had moderate pain relief.

I am going to try the gelatin idea and  I continue to diet  (I am pescatarian) & weight lift for muscle strengthening.

One key fact that I was told by my doctor:  Every pound of weight that you lose is 3 pounds off of your knees.

Has anyone else fought this battle and did you win?

I have no cartlidge in my knees anymore (both knees) and should have knee replacement.  I have done the shots, and now am having cortizone shots too, as to prolong the surgery.  I am 53 and am desperately looking for another solution. I still can walk but not without alot of pain.  As much as I hate liver, do you think the cod liver oil will help at all at this stage?  Also, am looking for anyone who can help with Lou Gehrigs Disease.  Not for me, but my husband.

RevBLoyal I am eighty next year,at fifty plus I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis  my brother in law was diagnosed about the same time he went with doctors advise and took the medication he prescibed.I changed my life style, changed my diet no red meat lots of oily fish took a mixture of cod liver oil and orange juice on a empty stomach every morning I made a good recovery. My bro in law had more and more treatments got worse and worse he ended up in a terrible state and died 10 years ago,he blamed the treatment I think he just took the wrong route you must work with your body not against it,all these quick fixes are no use it is your life style that caused your illness ,you have to bite the bullet and reverse the process .treated right the human body is an amazing piece of equipment.,I am fit and active I work out in my garage gym regularly, also I am up very early every morning hitting golf balls.I can run easily with no effort some times I have a quick burst just for sheer joy of living. Was I just lucky?as Gary Player said"the more i practise the luckier I get".I got cancer 7 years ago so I used the same idea,I had caused  my cancer.I pushed my self too hard causing stress,I refused the surgery ect and decided to stop the stress.started  enjoying  life, laughter is great medicine.but stress is a killer.Best of luck  I treat it as though it is easy to change your life,it sure is not .but It is possible.as I said on another page docters are not gods, they are humans.with faults like us.Well there it is.Always do what you think is right, for you then you can only blame yourself like I do.Best wishes.

I would be interested in your product.  How would one purchase it?  thanks

DLW - I believe there is another option for you to explore.  Some doctors do offer meniscus (cartilage) transplants.  This surgery would be much easier than a replacement.  However, I do not believe most orthopedics will offer this, so, you will have to search to find one.  Good luck to you.

  • Sorry Dlw  you are an such a terrible state with your knees,my wife as had her knee joints replaced I did not want her to have the operations but she is a doctor person so brave, unfortunately three disks prolapsed in her back during the operation so she has gained no benifit.she was 68 last year at the time of the operations.so quite a bit older than you .I saw a man on TV who lost the cartldge in both legs he had done a series of exersizes to the muscles of his knee's and  an overcame his disability and performed with no pain ,stepping up and down on a chair, his advise should be on the internet some where,I dont know whether this info is off any help.

I had a doctor tell me not to eat pork in any form. I stopped and my pain and stiffness went away in about 6 months.  That was 25 years ago.

Someone told me about a Dr Andrew Yun at St Johns hospital in Santa Monica, CA.  He does a procedure were he inserts a pad were normally the cartilage would be in the knee joint.  Evidently people have had a lot of success with it and are pain free.
